    Ann Patchett: Bel Canto

I must have missed something. I found this book not so good. It also belongs in the category I have recently dubbed "brevity cult."

    Seafaring Novels

Migey, Interesting that you bring up Jules Verne's 20,000 leagues under the Sea. I put that on my kindle and have enjoyed it quite a bit. Haven't read it since junior high school.

If you could meet any one who would you meet?

I'd like to hang out with Benjamin Franklin. Now there was a guy!

    Mario Puzo

I've read the Godfather three times. Very insightful book. But another good one by Puzo was Fool's Die, set in Las Vegas at the Xanadu casino. Brilliant study on human behavior. Both of these books have a meandering path but Puzo can keep it together. I doubt, however, that books like this would...

Jeffrey Archer: A Prisoner Of Birth

Which writer would you choose as a pal?

I second a vote for Anthony Bourdain as a travel/drinking buddy. Alan Furst to run about Europe. And Carlos Ruiz Zafon for Spain.

    H.V. Morton anyone?

I've read several of HV Morton's travel books which were penned between the 1920's and 1950's. This man is a marvel of historical interpretation and I would highly recommend these volumes to anyone traveling to any particular place he has described. Even though the books may seem out of date...

do you keep track of the books you read?

I don't keep lists but wish I did. I think I'll start this year. It would be fun to go back and look at all the titles. Thing is, I give so many books away to my library that I don't have them all for reference. Hence list = good idea.

What kind of reader are you?

SaliotThomas, That reminds me of the readers that used to sit above the cigar rollers in factories in Cuba and Florida. I read at least a book a week, sometimes more. I never go to sleep without one.

    C.J. Sansom: Dark Fire

Will be getting to this series soon. But currently reading Winter In Madrid and liking it so far.

    Jack London: The Sea Wolf

Sparkchaser, You're twice the nuclear engineer I dream of being. But, you know, that made me think, could I take him? Could I pen a story that would be worthy? It might be worth a shot. But first I have a sequel to wrap and then I'm caught between a sort of Patrick O'Brian type thing...

    Jack London: The Sea Wolf

I have to go back and read The Sea Wolf again. Loved that book for Larsen more than Weyden. Don't know anything about seal hunting but perhaps it could have been used metaphorically in the story. Still, I wouldn't have the nerve to tell London how to improve a story. Just sayin'

    Tawni O'Dell

Sofia, Yeah that was a bit creepy but O'Dell's plot was clever and things fit together very well, including the ending.

    The Punisher

Thanks for the update. Have to get out there and browse a few.

    Proof Reading?

Has anyone else noticed the increasing number of mistakes in newspapers these days? I'm talking about missing words, poor spelling, things of this nature. Some highly respected rags are showing signs of chafing. Have they cut the proof readers? This is pathetic.

    Tom Rob Smith: Child 44

I read this book not because of the advertising machine, but because I was interested in the drama of the lead character, Leo. I got the bonus plan because the other characters are equally well-developed. Just my opinion, but this is what writing should be. The thriller side of the book is not...
