Just finished Child 44. This book is in my top five (that is top five read in the past 12 months.)
There are a few coincidences in the book that sometimes jar you out of the narrative in that they are a little too far-fetched, but forget that. The rest of the book is worth every minute of...
Wondering if anyone else has enjoyed Tawni O'Dell's books, Back Roads, Coal Run, and Sister Mine.
I found Back Roads the best and among my favorite books. It's a great character study and O'Dell has a sense of place like few writers do and most writers should. Coal Run less so, but still a...
Magazines: The ones with the good pictures: Private Pilot, Trains, Ship's Monthly. Then there's some others: Publishers Weekly (needs a design redesign; photos are far from the stories, didn't they learn that the picture of the author should be next to the column where they talk about 'em?)...
How is the Punisher doing these days? I haven't looked at this comic since the 1980's. I found a stack of them from the college days. Have a Number 1 and all. His motto used to be, "If you're guilt, you're dead." Nice.
Has anyone read Somerset Maugham's The Summing Up? Found his comments quite interesting. I enjoyed his short stories and a few of his novels. But, in The Summing Up I found him focused and intuitive about writing, people, and the intersection of the two.
Just wondering....
Definitely have to give the Kindle a chance. I'm loving mine. And the savings on book purchase will eventually catch up with the investment. Not to mention, saving all those trees.
(By the way, my 44 has nothing to do with the book 44. Just sayin')
Morosetoast,
I agree that writing in books is against the grain. I also like to keep the books I like.
And, libraries are not what they used to be. Here in my locale, they have internet stations and people are tapping away and giggling and webcamming etc.
Just as I don't like my bars to...
Book that I had to read more than once: American Tabloid by James Ellroy. There's so much there, read it 5 times.
The one book for a desert island: Pillars of the Earth
Have to meditate on the other list.
I read A Simple Plan a few years ago. Haven't gotten to Ruin. A Simple Plan could have ended slightly earlier, other than that, a great study on how things go horribly wrong.
Sorry, but I forgot to post here when I joined. Anyway, I've been writing long enough to forget what I wrote. I happened upon this forum and enjoy the discussions and interaction. Looking forward to more and would like to see people's work in the writer's showcase, which is a great feature of...
I read Stand Into Danger by Alexander Kent not long ago. Not among my favorites. If you're a fan of The Sea Wolf, it may be tough to find others up to that standard. Going to pry open the shelves and see what else I have.
Favorite Booze: Jack Daniel's with club soda and ice. If you don't have the club soda, that's okay, too. And if you don't have a glass, well, that's why I throw the top away.
