Guilty as charged! The point I was trying to make is that as long as people know who you are talking about then you should be fine and you can always ask someone who speaks the language what the correct pronunciation of any given name is. Believe me, I understand what it's like to feel...
Ok, here's my two cents: I don't think it matters all that much. I think it's better to pronounce authors' names (and foreign words in general) in a way that sounds natural in the language you are speaking. For instance, when speaking French I try to pronounce English or Spanish names the way...
Merci! Here's mine, not too hard I think...
The milk and honeyed congregation, scrubbed and apple-cheeked
Salute Apollo 13 from the rattle jewelry seats.
Ohhhh sorry, I meant SA as in South America... :o Most artists will only go to Argentina and Brazil and maybe Chile. But most of them just ignore us altogether... Both The White Stripes and Moby did concerts in Bogotá (Colombia) this year, but it almost never happens. So I'm trying to go to as...
Well, they sold out real fast in Paris too but I just couldn't resign myself to not seeing him live and since I'm probably gonna move back to SA next year I figured it was now or never so I did the ebay thing :o
Les Invasions Barbares on DVD. I suck at reviewing films (or books for that matter) so all I can tell you is that this movie made me cry my eyes out but it also made me laugh until my stomach hurt. And I absolutely loved the accent, très charmant!!!
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada...
Vanity Fair, by William M. Thackeray. I must have read it at least a dozen times. Love it! I would also recommend Music for Chameleons, by Truman Capote, and The Book of Illusions, by Paul Auster.
This one was originally written in Spanish, which I think is nkit's first language ;)
Sports Night :( :( :(
from Amazon.com
Before there was Aaron Sorkin's West Wing, there was Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night, which followed the trials and tribulations of a smart, energetic television staff as they scrambled to put on a nightly cable sports show, not unlike ESPN's...
I agree, even though it was not what I expected.
I'm a late convert so I haven't read that many of his books yet. So far my favorites are the Dark Tower series (except for Wizard and Glass), Rose Madder, It, Night Shift and Everything's Eventual.
Isabel Allende has been one of my favorite writers ever since I read The House of the Spirits when I was 13. It was very hard for me to admit that I wasn't at all impressed by either City of the Beasts or Kingdom of the Golden Dragon. In fact, I hated those books. So it was with great relief...
Almost Transparent Blue was a bit too weird for my taste. I didn't think it was shocking, merely gross and pointless.
I really enjoyed Coin Locker Babies, which is probably as weird but there's a lot more to the story than just sex, drugs and puking.
DVD: The Nightmare Before Christmas. Wonderful! Even more so than when I first saw it.
Cinema: Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. I loved it!!! What can I say, Tim Burton is a genius.
Most of my books are "back home". When I moved to Paris I just brought dictionaries and grammar books, my Haruki Murakami books and my TODA MAFALDA. In the four years I've been here I've bought quite a few books and the ones that are not in boxes (tiny Parisian studio) are arranged by language...
