I have voted several times and not participated simply because I don't have the book and it would be hard for me to get a copy unless I order it online, which would mean paying about 20 dollars on top of the price of the book for shipping and handling, plus having to wait 2 to 3 weeks for...

Yeah she's kind of fun, I'll give you that. But not enough for me to waste my time (or money) on her. I like music I can listen to, and she's more of a visual "thing".
Have you read The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides? It's dark, sweet and beautifully written. I would also recommend The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz. I know they don't seem like the most obvious choices but these are two of the most emotionally powerful books I have read...

I'm not sure what you mean by "similar". You mention Soseki, Ishiguro and Murakami (Ryu or Haruki?), but those are three very different authors with little in common, other than the fact that they're all japanese.
Maybe you could try reading Yukio Mishima or Yasunari Kawabata...
