Poll: How old is the average reader on this Forum?

For me, basically copy RedGlazzies' response from above, but substitute 23 for 20.

    Stardust (vs. The Princess Bride)

I agree with both points here. While there was some sense of parody in Stardust, it didn't quite match TPB's sense of irony. I'm probably biased toward TPB for nostalgia's sake, but I do find it to be very rewatchable. I doubt I'll see Stardust again for a long time.

    Inspirational Photo Books

Not sure how unconventional it is, but I was given a Lonely Planet photo book a couple of years ago that juxtaposed images from around the world on opposing pages i.e children at play in the Middle East, children at play in South America.

List your favorite Stephen King novels

Standouts, in my opinion, are: It The Shining The Stand I also really enjoyed Bag of Bones, but I haven't read much of his 'newer' stuff since I gave up on Insomnia.

    I'm back!

Hey all, I seem to have been away for quite a while. Oops! Anyhoo, my reading has picked up again a bit, so I'll be able to contribute something worthwhile to the discussion (or, continue contributing worthless comments as always). Good to be back!

    Reincarnation

No, I don't believe in the spiritual form of reincarnation. I do believe that when we die, we decompose and the atoms that once made up our physical selves will go on to become other things, and, as someone else has mentioned, our DNA lives on in any descendants. Satisfied, remindy-robot?

Toby Young: How To Lose Friends & Alienate People

Finished this a couple of weeks ago. Highly enjoyable, not just for the at times hilariously inappropriate behaviour of a young British man trying to make it as a journalist in New York, but also for the thoughtful perspective on the social scene of the New York publishing elite. For those...

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

I think you should read the rest of the thread before you make a comment like that.

    Underlining: Addition or Subtraction

I'd take it back. I hate underlining even in textbooks; it makes me think I should be really focusing on that portion of the text and that it has something really valid within, when in reality a seven year old could have underlined it.

    Disturbing Trend in Education

Wow, you crawl under a rock for a few days and look what you miss. I've nothing to add that won't be a repetition of what others have said, however I would like to say that this thread is an example of why I joined TBF (or whatever we're calling it now) in the first place - debate (the...

DC Comics: 30 Essential Graphic Novels

    Ooo, speedy. Thanks, people!

DC Comics: 30 Essential Graphic Novels

I've only glanced quickly at The Dark Knight Returns, but it looked amazing (my brother thinks my attraction is due to Returns being my favourite Batman film). Which of the Batman graphic novels would you all recommend?

    J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows **CONTAINS SPOILERS**

Now that I think about it, I'm more annoyed about how the deaths of Tonks and Lupin were dealt with, as others have already mentioned. For two such major characters...it seemed as if Harry was ticking off the dead as he looked around "There's some guy I don't know, some girl from Hufflepuff, oh...

H.P.& The Deathly Hallows midnight party-to go or not to go?

Oh, I never thought of that! I would have been fired for screaming at customers all day. There ended up only being about 6 of us in the line at 9am Saturday (I got to go earlier than anticipated), but two staff members were standing close to us and opening to the back of the book, reading small...

    Classical Ranking

I've only read Wuthering Heights, and don't really have much to say about it. I'm not really a classics girl, though. Poe is always value for money.

    Your all-time favorite book

I may have to think about this one for a while. I know my immediate and obvious answer, but that is simply the book I have read the most and enjoyed each time. I'll have to search my memory for a book that made more of an impact on me.

    J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows **CONTAINS SPOILERS**

I completely agree, and I've written elsewhere that I thought it should have been Neville. His whole backstory is focused on what Lestrange did to his family, and while he gets to off Nagini in a weird-heroic kind of way, there was no real emotion tied to it other than 'Damn. Neville got hard!'

    J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows **CONTAINS SPOILERS**

To be fair to ol' JK, just about everything that could possibly have been considered has been written about in fanfiction, so none of it is really surprising. Also, Harry didultimately sacrifice himself. He was unaware that he would be able to come back, and he did it without announcing it to...

    J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows **CONTAINS SPOILERS**

Never! It's still all sinking in, I think. I only wish I hadn't read the spoiler epilogue early in the week, which turned out to be real (damn my lack of willpower). Anyway, I've already posted on two other forums and I'm a bit HP'd out at the moment, so I'll write more later.
