I love words people use when they are surprised; they're always so spontaneous!! (being the nature of surprise).
A favourite: egad!
Least favourite word: whenever people use the word 'literally' when they aren't actually being literal e.g - "I literally died when I heard that". NO YOU...
I studied this book for literature and loved it.
Not sure about the Christian undertones thing, but I was discussing this with my brother the other day (he's Christian, I'm not), that you can probably find elements of Christianity in most stories, if you choose to see Christian writings as...
I studied Angela's in Year 12 and I think it is the best book I've ever studied.
I think Frank's brother, Malachy, also wrote a book on their childhood after Angela's came out. Something about a monk in the title? I haven't read this though.
I agree, and "Graveyard Shift" from his Night Shift collection is still the grossest and most unnerving story I've ever read.
PS If you're going to read Laymon, do so before you read any King because (IMHO), King taints everyone else by being so good. Take THAT all you King-haters (don't know...
Totally agree with that, although it was shown here (Oz) so long ago that I must have been...9 or 10 when I saw it. Scared the hell out of me. I actually saw the movie first and then read the short story (novella, whatever). I think it's one of King's best, if not his most original.
Hey guys,
Wow, what a great idea, a place for book lovers to actually talk about books! I'm looking forward to discussing everyone's favourite authours and texts.
I'm currently taking a year off university to save some money, so I have a lot of time for reading. My resolution this year was...
I don't know if this counts as just finished...but I'm finished WITH "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" for now. I got about halfway through and found that the main character started getting a bit preachy for my liking. Might give it another go later.
Here are a few I found after a quick scan of my shelf:
"They're out there. Black boys in white suits up before me to commit sex acts in the hall and get it mopped up before I can catch them" - Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
"May 20th - I am afraid. Someone is coming." - O'Brien, Z...
I won't write it here as it'll probably take up a lot of room (and hurt my poor fingers), but it has to be the passage from "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole: aged 13 and 3/4" where the kids go on the bus trip and Adrian keeps an itinerary of their trip (September 19th - Class four D's trip to...
In no particular order (well, I guess it's the order in which they appear on my shelf):
Adrian Mole - The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 and 3/4
Winnie the Pooh
Pippin - LOTR
Aslan - Chronicles of Narnia
Bill Denbrough - It
R.P McMurphy - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest
I love the song that Billy Boyd wrote and performed for "Return of the King", where he sings for Denethor. It makes me so sad. Pippin is my favourtie, and underappreciated i think :(
I'm just kidding.
No, I know I dont drink enough water, but it's something that i forget to do. Much like eating sometimes, or cleaning the house, or the shopping....got the whole absent-minded professor thing going.
Oh, except I'm not a professor :p
Hey all,
To celebrate the end of our undergraduate studies, a mate and I are planning a trip to Ireland next year. I was wondering if anyone knows of any books (fiction or non-fiction) to get us in the mood for the Emerald Isle. I'm thinking particularly of Bill Bryson type travel books...
Hey badlydrawngirl.
I love your name and avatar. Squall rules all. :)
I often find that I get inspiration just from daydreaming. Put on your headphones, lie under the clouds, think about your life if you like. If you're anything like me you'll enter a kind of meditative state where ideas...
Those of you who disliked Austen, do you enjoy any of the Bronte sisters novels?
Personally I think Austen is a bit...flakey isn't the right word, but anyway. I like the Bronte sisters' style, which is more dark and I think focused on the growth or destruction of her characters rather than...
We just call them markets in Australia (I think we all do, correct me if I'm wrong), traditionally they're held on Sunday.
We have one that's run through most of the week at uni and there's a great book stall. It's run by an old man who always says "Pay $5, if you don't like it bring it back...
Lex I agree, Ralph is so cute. Any ep where he plays a key role is great ("I love Lisa", "This Little Wiggy").
I think my favourite ep would have to come from the Season 3 - Season 10 period, outside of that I feel that the show is a bit lacking. I love the episode where they get the pool...
