    Canyou Believe it !?!??!

Well, if the Boston curse could be thwarted last year, maybe it's time for the city of Chicago to see a World Series champ. Of course I really don't care. Just as long as those darn Yankees don't make it to the Series. :D

When do you give up on a book?

It really depends for me. I have given up on books at all stages. 30 pages in, 100 pages in, right in the middle (one time even in the middle of the 2nd book of a trilogy), and there were two times I left the final 20 pages unread. Mostly is has to do with caring for the characters, or even...

    Worst Character Name

Robin Hobb's "Farseer Trilogy", though very good, is chock full of bad character names. FitzChilavry, the main character, has to be one of the worst.

    Books you want to re-read

I "read" Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides via audio CD. I did it for a long trip my wife and I were taking. I want to actually read the book. I also would like to re-read Singularity Sky by Charles Stross. It's a sci-fi book that had a lot political commentary, and I wasn't in the right frame...

    Books set where you live

I have never read any books set in or around where I live now (north of Philly). But I have read quite a few books based in areas around where I am originally from (Detroit). I understand what Cajunmama, fearing that the writers would get something wrong. But the books I have read based in...

    Thank you. :)

Starting a New Thread? Would you? Will you?

I am not intimidated. Heck, I run a forum myself. But it is kind of frustrating when no one posts anything in that thread after you. I started three and have had no replies. Now two of them might be because no one has read any of the authors work. That's just the way it is. Still a good...

    Your Pets

My wife and I have a dog named Molson (already discussed in my "I am new to the board" thread). But thought I would mention it here again. He is the dog on my avatar. And he is a Golden Retriever.

My Favourite Fantasy Books Of All Time

Wow! I guess I need to check out "The Magician" by Feist. ;) I have not read as much fantasy as others. But here is what I liked. "The Lions of Al-Rassan" by Guy Gavriel Kay "A Song for Arbonne" by Guy Gavriel Kay "Tigana" by Guy Gavriel Kay "The Monarchies of God" series by Paul...

    Who likes Dilbert?

Did you know that Scott Adams has written some sci-fi/fantasy? I came across a book of his called "The Religion War", which from what I saw is a sequel to "God's Debris". Anyone read these?

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

    Got that right! :D

    Who likes Dilbert?

Yes, I agree that Dilbert ranks up there. I have found many times it hits the nail on the head of office life. Another one that is poorly drawn but can be very funny (to me) is Pearls Before Swine. Then there is Get Fuzzy. I really enjoy it. Especially the personalities of the three...

Name a "Mainstream BlockBuster" you actually like!

I hate to say it, but I enjoyed "Angels & Demons" by Dan Brown. Really flat characters and a 6th grade reading level writing style. But the story itself was damn exciting. And no, I don't believe what he wrote is/was true, but kudos to him for doing the research to write the book...

Have you ever met one of your favourite authors?

That's great Libra! I hope to meet him someday. I will be meeting Jeffrey Ford on Saturday. I have only read two of his novels, but enjoyed both.

    Jeffrey Eugenides: The Virgin Suicides

Actually I did enjoy it. I was just agreeing with Stewart's explanation of the ending. I thought it was a great read. And like mehastings said, much of that had to do with it not having a "happy huggy" ending. It is refreshing to read a book like that.

Jeffrey Ford: The Portrait Of Mrs. Charbuque

I recently read "The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque" by Jeffrey Ford and found it very good. It was nominated in 2003 for the World Fantasy Award. I am posting this in the "Fiction" section though, because I think it would be enjoyed by the non-fantasy crowd. If it is not against forum rules, I...

    Counting down.........

Oh, I thought "A Feast of Crows" was a November release worldwide. Either way, I can wait. :) Disappointing to hear mixed reviews about Kearney's new book. I should look them up. If you are not necessarily a sci-fi and are going to read Reynolds, my suggestion is to start with "Chasm...

Your future at TBF - Poll

I think it is a little unfair of you to call newbies stupid. That is what I said about not treating others nicely. Of course someone is not going to know enough to search other forums, or be too excited about joining the forum that they will forget to search. (I for one did do searches when I...
