Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

I read this just under a year ago. I will admit it was a flawed book, but even amongst those, it was still a good read. I think the prose was one of the best parts. As for the story, I think the first quarter of the book was really well done. It was almost as if each chapter was a little...

What do you pay for gas?

This is getting ridiculous. I was happy when I bought gas yesterday for under $3.00 a gallon. Of course my folks proceeded to tell me how he is paying $0.60 cheaper a gallon where they live. I don't see this madness ending anytime soon.

    Jeffrey Ford

I wanted to post this, and I hope I am not overstepping any boundaries. I also figured that it could be used as a thread to discuss his work. But Jeffrey Ford is doing a couple of readings with another author, Greg Frost. The "gigs" are on Saturday, October 8th. You can get the info from...

    Neil Gaiman

I have the "Two Voices" thing on CD, with Brian Dennehy and Bebe Neuwirth. And at the beginning the announcer pronounces it GAY-men. I can only assume that it was correct.

    Fantasy Books ?

I have read "A Song for Arbonne", "Tigana", and "The Lions of Al-Rassan" (which ranks as a top five book for me). And I recommend them all (directing towards Worm). I have the "Mosaic" duology and "The Last Light of the Sun" on the TBR pile.

    Fantasy Books ?

I second the recommendation of Guy Gavriel Kay. He is an excellent writer, and he has plenty of stand-alone novels to test his style and the genre.

A Bit of (Stephen) Fry and (Hugh) Laurie

I have "The Gun Seller" sitting on my to be read pile. I came across it at an IKEA store of all places. They had loads of books with titles in Swedish taking space on shelves for display. And I kept seeing Laurie's name on it. So I got curious and opened one to the back flap and was...

Better Make it Official (Part 2)

Yes. When he was just short of two years old. He turned four this past July. He's a golden retriever named Molson (just as a joke, it's not my favorite beer or anything).

Better Make it Official (Part 2)

Just like Doug Johnson, I have posted first a few times and didn't introduce myself. My apologies. My name is Scott. I have been an avid reader since college, though most of it consists of sci-fi and fantasy. Recently in the last year I have been reading books that fall more in the general...

    Jeffrey Eugenides: Middlesex

This is one of only two books that I ever listened to via audio. My wife and I were heading to Detroit to see my family, and I figured it would be cool to pass the time during the 10 hour drive (and what better then to "read" a story about the city we are going to). And much credit to...

    Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

I just finished reading this last night. And though I can understand some of the complaints and questions brought up, I found it a very interesting and haunting read. Maybe it is from reading too much sci-fi in my life. (I recently started reading more general fiction.) But I had a hard time...

Mitch Albom: The Five People You Meet In Heaven

I just joined, and have to jump on the bandwagon of those that liked/loved this book. I read it last summer while on vacation. And maybe it was the fact that I wanted something that was a good story, not a piece of literature that opened new avenues or explored new ideas. But in some ways...
