I'm the ultimate tightwad. I buy my books from a 24-hour book sale. For $20 I can get a years supply. I hardly ever buy books new, even the ones I really want.
I read a lot of Robert Heinlein's books when I was in my teens. Red Planet, Have Spacesuit - Will Travel, that sort of thing. I enjoyed them as entertainment and completely missed any political points he was trying to make (if any were there at all). I didn't get around to reading Stranger in...
David,
A search on bookcrossing for the United Kingdom shows 1,647 members. I'd say the Brits were definitely into it.
You may find some people in your region from the 'search members' area of the site.
I'm in a similar position. We are limited on space in this house, and while I would love to have a study full of books, I am restricted to one bookcase. So I buy a years supply of books at a local annual 24-hour sale, read them through the year then release them or donate them back again...
I'm a bit of a buff of older science fiction writers. Bob Shaw, Clifford Simak, Hal Clement, even Theodore Sturgeon. I find it interesting to see how they manage to work a story without high-level technical details. I would like to read some Alfred Bester some day (particularly 'The...
It's nice to see that I'm not the only Bookcrosser on the forum.
I got around the release reluctance by getting two copies of books I liked, then releasing one of them.
If you are interested, my bookshelf is here.
I would be really chuffed if one of them managed to make their way overseas. :D
When I saw the word 'classics' I immediately thought of Robert Louis Stevenson, Jonathan Swift and Charles Dickens. It seems you are aiming for more recent titles *grin*
I recommend 'A Clockwork Orange' by Anthony Burgess. Also, I found the original version of 'Gulliver's Travels' (not the...
I must admit to having a bit of difficulty getting through 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (English version). It would be even harder if it was in French as I don't speak the language. :-)
Other books I have found hard reads were:
O-Zone - Paul Theroux
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle...
Darren - thanks for the welcome.
HBinjection - a bookcrosser is a member of www.bookcrossing.com. We release books 'into the wild' once read, the aim being to turn the whole world into a library.
Prolixic - I make that score starting around 72 points depending on the placement. If it was...
This sounds to me like Arthur C Clarke's 'A Fall of Moondust'.
Basically, a tourist 'moonboat' gets caught in a moonquake and ends up buried under 15 metres of dust. Rescuers on the surface race against time to get them out. That's pretty much it.
Written about 1960 I think.
Hi everybody.
Just poked my nose in and liked what I saw.
I enjoy science fiction, crime thrillers and mysteries, and occasionally read the odd non-fiction book. I also play Scrabble and do cryptic crosswords.
I am also a keen bookcrosser.
Once again, hi.
