Can you recommend a British detective

After seeing the televisinon series I would suggest R D Wingfield's Inspector Frost books, and if you like university educated detectives then maybe the Gervase Fen stories by Edmund Crispin.

    Books you didn't finish

You didn't miss much by not finishing The Rule of Four. I made it the whole way through and was extremely disappointed by the ending, mainly because nothing happened. It was as if the authors were showing off their knowledge of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, and ran out of ideas as to how to...

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

Normally I read 1 or 2 mystery/thriller types a week, but as I started a blog in 2006 I thought I might list my reading, out of curiosity. In the end I had a total of 65, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction.

    The Rutles(?)

I remember a scene where the narrator is in the underground club where The Rutles first appeared. The lights go out, and you hear him say "A rat's just run up my leg" Sergeant Rutles Only Darts Club Band?

    Vocabularies

Without referring to a dictionary, I would suggest bored lethargy. My word is 'urinator', as in "The pearls in her necklace had been provided by a professional urinator."

    Ten Pin Bowling

I did a couple of years of 10-pin in the early nineties, but dropped out because the lanes closed. At the time I was averging mid-180s. Now I'm lucky to hit 150 on the rare occasions I go. The trick to getting the swing is to rotate your hand over the top of the ball as you deliver it. As...

    Earth/Lunatic Asylum

This isn't a reference to Wonko the Sane, who decided the earth was mad and built an asylum to put it in, is it?

What new TV shows are you watching?

I'm watching Bones, even though there is nothing in common with the books other than the name of the character, House, Boston Legal, Stargate: Atlantis andTthe Ghost Whisperer (for light relief). I tried to watch Commander in Chief, but only managed the first two episodes. Geena Davis just...

    Raising the Dead

I've just finished 'Recalled to Life' by Robert Silverberg. It's about scientists who have devised a way to bring recently dead people back to life, and the reactions they get from politics, religion and general populace.

What will put you off a book?

Hmmm - from the same place as "I'd rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass" maybe? That would be the song 'One More Minute' by Weird Al Yankovic Back to the original topic. What puts me off is whiny characters. I have no interest in how hard their life is, I read for diversion...
