Yes, Gary Jennings is a great author. I also read Raptor which has a mythological sort of theme. The main character does alot of travelling and you get to see the great Roman cities (before Rome fell) through the eyes of the main character. It was impressive.
I'm reading Fanuilh by Daniel Hood. It's the first book in the Familiar Dragon Trilogy. It's about a scholar that stumbles upon his murdered wizard friend and ends up being bonded to the wizard's dragon familiar, Fanuilh. He then has to solve the mystery of the wizard's death...and there are...
discussion
Good question. Are we just focusing on one book or the entire genre of scif-fi fantasy. If readers are new to the genre, it might be good to start off with stand-alone books. Most people new to this area don't like to commit to a trilogy or series first off. The Hobbit by...
I'll help
I'll help. I'm going to check out the library of sci-fi/fantasy books and start a discussion. Since we've both read the George Martin books perhaps we could start there.
reading list
Well, right now I've been itching to read horror novels but a few books have been added to the list not horror related:
Salem's Lot by Stephen King (finished)
IT by Stephen King (1/2 way through)
The Red Church by Scott Nicholson (finished)
Hell House by Richard Matheson...
Yes I have! I agree those books were awesome. I wish they wouldn't have killed off as many wolves as they did in "Game of Thrones". Murder and compiracy in a fantasy setting was fantastic.
nope
Nope haven't read it but I love Greek mythology. I read alot of fantasy but haven't found much as good as the old school...Drangonlance Chronicles/Legends Trilogy...etc
speed reading
I tried to do that speed reading, but you just miss out on so much of the book. I know it doesn't take me long to read a Stephen King novel, but if I an older book or a book by a foreign author, my read speed slows greatly. I guess it just depends on the book and the interest in it.
Yeah, Anne Rice can get monatonous after awhile. But I did like Pandora of the New Vampire Chronicles and I loved the Witching Hour (in the Mayfair Witches trilogy although I thought Witching Hour was the best). I bought Merrik and its on my list of books to read. I'm dying to know about the...
Hey all. I'm new here as well. I'm currently going through a horror novel phase. In fact, I just posted a thread in the Fiction section asking you all what the scariest book you ever read was.
Any book recommendations are welcome. I also love fantasy novels (Dragonlance Chronicles being...
Hey I was wondering what has been the scariest book you've ever read? So far, "Hell House" by Richard Matherson has been the scariest book I've ever read and I'm trying to find something as good or better.
I like to read books that make you jump when you hear an unexpected noise (like...
The Disc World series by Terry Pratchet is good BUT if you want a REALLY REALLY funny read try A Malady of Magicks by Craig Shaw Gardner...his other two books in this trilogy are A Multitude of Monsters and A Night in the Netherland...
It is halrious. Some of the characters that appear are...
Omeros by Derek Walcott was a real tough read for me.
Beloved was also a difficult read for me...kept getting lost in the imagery. Anyone else have this problem. Most people I've talked to say they loved this book.
Oh - try getting the audio version of any book that's difficult to read...
