I loved all these books for many different reasons although they all seem to have a certain darkness about them.
Das Boot - Lothar Gunther-Bucheim
Fantastic story of a U-Boat crew in the Atlantic during WW II. Based on the authors experiences you can feel the claustrophobia and smell the fear and diesel fumes.
Utterly engrossing
I try to read for at least an hour a day and longer when I can. I rarely watch TV in the evenings and can usually get a couple of hours in then. If I get a quiet weekend I can read all day both days which drives my better half mad:) .

Most definitely. I find it very hard to start a new book immediately after finishing the previous one. I usually have to do something else for an hour or two before I can decide what I want to read next.
