The books are at list price(check on amazon for exact prices). Shipping - I use media mail, which is fairly cheap, less than the price amazon gives per book.
So, I recently went to see Prince Caspian(Narnia) and remembered my childhood days of voraciously reading fantasy. Any suggestios for good children's/teen fantasy? things like Narnia, Harry Potter, the Bartimaeus Trilogy, his Dark Materials...basically, great fantasy that is somehow related to...
Forgive me for saying this, but it is a bit interesting/amusing to be reading this, being a teen who was a kid not too long ago. My parents tried to get me to read "classics" but by age 12 I was a voracious reader of basically all children's literature and they sort of gave up on knowing what I...
Personally, I just...don't read translations. Somehow, I have enough books to occupy me in 3 languages to wait until I learn some others...I'm working on Spanish, Latin and ancient Greek now. It just feels that a translation isn't what the author actually wrote, so I can't stand reading them...
I can't beat the 3000 year old saga, but I do have a pretty old book - 1836. It's a small volume of French poetry.
I have quite a few other pretty old works in french:
-the memoirs of marguerite de valois from 1860
-a sequel to the three musketeers from 1880
-a novel by anatole france from...
actually, I've recently started working on one. It's a translation of a lesser known work taking place during the French Revolution, titled Ingenue.
Seeing how I'm only 16, though, it might be a while until it's published.
For The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, most definately the Modern Library Classics editions. For 20 Years After, The Viscount de Bragelonne, The Black Tulip and La Reine Margot, I read the Oxford World's Classics(David Coward) translations - they're the next best. I haven't read...
If they're translations I will be breathing down your back to make sure you get the good ones...I've seen some very bad translations of Dumas in my day.
Which of his books are your favourites?
Hi all,
I have some autographed books that I'm not really interested in keeping, because I'm not much into the authors. I'm willing to sell them for the list price of the book(the books are all in perfect new condition). If anyone is interested, let me know by e-mail(artemisfowlIII@gmail.com)...
This is another time for me to mention my obsession with various french books...I am trying to collect the complete works of Alexandre Dumas(not a set, but different editions, his poetry that was published separately, etc...) and any sources that directly inspired him, such as memoirs. I also...
Yep, I know..he's written so much that I read him non stop and still have tons of books to read.
Have you read 20 years after, the prequel to Viscount of Bragelonne?
For me, it really depends on the inaccuracy. I read a lot of Alexandre Dumas, who writes historical novels which sometimes switch around the chronological order of events to fit the plot, etc...but I don't really mind, because they still serve to teach me history I didn't know, and they're...
I've seen it. I didn't enjoy it much. They chose good actors for Margot and La Mole, but all the others were terrible casting, and the movie was just so..inaccurate and so HOllywood. I prefer the Russian version, which is longer, more accurate, has better casting, chose a better actor for Henri...
I prefer the translations published by Oxford World's Classics, translated by David Coward - they have good notes, and the translation is good(if you must read a translation, that is). I prefer to read things in the order they are in a series, so I would suggests:
1.The Three Musketeers...
Yes...well, you see, I have a huge problem with translations. It just feels to me that I'm not reading what the author actually wrote. So I can bear to wait...but barely.
Btw, for anyone here who has read Dumas's Queen Margot: I'm rereading it now, and it's just as amazing as the first time -...
