It was actually my interest in Dumas that drove me to read Rafael Sabatini, and I have to admit that, although I prefer Dumas for all his historical information and political intrigues, I still very much love Sabatini. Captain Blood is definately one of my favorites, and I also love the movie...
The Man in the Iron Mask is the last part of 10 years after, which is the sequel to 20 years after, which is the sequel to the Three Musketeers. I suppose you could read Iron Mask without the sequels, but I wouldn't suggest it.
Start with the three musketeers...it's one of my favorite books, and a great one too. And try other Dumas as well.
The fact that I"ve read a lot of those makes me feel better about how little I've read...
I have to disagree with all you people here. I think description is a very important part of any novel, and not just to set the setting, but as a stylistic thing. For example, I remember that the descriptions in Madame Bovary, simply the way they're written, both the fact that they're extremely...
I remember when I started reading the book in French, I was really amazed by Flaubert's word choice and use of French. I'm not sure that could be rendered into English, but I"ve heard that some translations are very good. With that said, is there anyone here who has/will read this book in French?
I'm glad you enjoyed it...Have you thought about reading any other books by Dumas?
I feel like an advertisor/promotional agent...Except that I"m not paid and I love Dumas so much I feel like I have to force him on everyone.
I hope there's no limit to the amount of books you can have on listal?
i just made an account, but I only have a few books on there now. Here's the link ,and thanks for all the advice!
The link to my account is http://monsoreau.listal.com
and, to see the books i own that I've added...
well, assigning my own numbers isn't a problem...I just need to find a good book database or way to catalogue them. I mean, I suppose excel is an option, but...
well, i dunno...LCC are Library of Congress cataloguing identifiers, right? My books weren't published in the U.S., and some haven't been translated.
Or maybe I have no clue what I'm talking about.
I doubt they have ISBNs...at least, not the editions I have for them all.
Basically, I'm doing lots of reading of books by Alexandre Dumas, and then researching his historical sources, some of which are really obscure and out of print, so I've had to get old editions and they have no ISBNs.
see, the books i want to catalogue are probably not listed in any database...they aren't things you could exactly buy at borders, so that's why i asked.
I realize there's quite a lot of threads about sites online where you can catalogue your books, etc...but I don't really want to dig through all those threads, as I just have a straightforward question: I need a site(or program) to catalogue all my books pertaining to a certain theme..i.e. I...
Well, I'm a very sentimental reader, so I get quite sad bout a lot of things I read. However, French literature always tends to be really tragic, you'd be set with pretty much anything. (joking, lol). I read a lot of Dumas and other French authors, and Dumas rarely has happy endings but his...
I'm really interested in the three musketeers, so I recently checked a book out from the library titled Not Exactly the Three Musketeers by Joel Rosenberg. It's the 10th in the series though, or something like that. Do you think i'll understand what's going on?
thanks in advance!!
Ana
Can i just say that I lose faith in the world when books become a way of vaunting your 'intelligence'(because you thought to decorate with them) instead of being the carriers of wisdom?
Ok, that sounds overly flowery and melodramatic..but it's true.
