    Spoiled by Literature?

Excellent writers can and do work in any genre. If you ignore an excellent writer because of their genre, it's your loss.

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

I think he got cross checked in the head by a 240 pounder last night. That glazed eye look is hard to fake.

    A few questions about writing

RE: plotting Chili Palmer is my guru: “I wait for characters to show up, ones I can use.” he says. Then, wait to see what they do. “You have to be patient. You have to let it happen. Not making anybody do anything they don't want to."

    A few questions about writing

The more literary types here might roll their eyes over this, but IMO The Simpsons is an excellent example of characters that all talk different. Shakespeare is pretty good too;) (Even though I don't understand many of the archaic words, I can easily tell that some characters are much more...

    Voice recognition

Make sure you buy an expensive microphone. You won't be happy with a cheap one.

    Voice recognition

I'm dictating this with Dragon right now. I love it. It's good if you produce a lot of documents, but you need to enunciate very clearly. Even then, it will make mistakes, but the mistakes don't bother me. It is much faster than I can type. Since I want to write clearly, I always go back...

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

John Hinckley http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/hinckley/hinckleytrial.html I'd say the appeal probably has to do with the sense of isolation, which would appeal to the delusional killers like Hinckley. I doubt that the Ted Bundy types would relate to Holden.

Name a "Mainstream BlockBuster" you actually like!

I have to disagree. A book can be popular because it offers insight on humanity and we're all human. A book about death can be popular because it teaches us something about a journey that we're all going to take. To me, offering insight on humanity, is art.

Name a "Mainstream BlockBuster" you actually like!

I believe the bible is still the best selling book of all time. Unless you want to call it "Crap," you can't say that all best sellers are crap.

Name a "Mainstream BlockBuster" you actually like!

Brown wrote an original, and detailed, story about the Holy Grail. That will be relevant longer after you and I are gone.

    I just finished reading...

Sick Puppy by Carl Hiassen. I laughed out loud several times and the characters were very compelling.

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

Interestingly, I thought one of the themes of Catcher was "fitting in" and one of the reasons its so popular is because people are constantly faced with people they disagree with, and they need to decide "Do I say something, or do I keep quiet to fit in?" It's a situtation that occurs...

    Dan Brown

Dan Brown gets compared to Rushdie. Let's discuss. I think it's valid. So many people believed the Davinci Code that the Catholic Church felt compelled to respond. To me that is a literary achievement. One that few writers have achieved. Rushdie is the only other recent writer who I can...

    Character Personality

Put them in more interesting situations. Everyone is boring when they are sitting on the couch watching TV. Think about what makes each character different. When a character does something you'd never do, you may be on to something interesting. When they all react differently to the same...
