Ok, since we're talking about The Sandman - What was everone's favorite story / collection and favorite character?
Favorite story / collection - The kindly Ones (I loved the doomed inevitability of it all)
Favorite Character - Death (I always had a bit of a crush on her:o )
I've finally finished Human Traces and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The book is epic in scope over 500 pages long it covers 60 years and 3 continents in its journey. The book traces the lives of two "mind doctors" from their early days in France and England in the mid 19th century through to just...
I wouldn't say so. But its popularity will usually only surge after it's won an award or if the author is particularly well known. Also depends on how you define a bestseller as every book I pick up claims to have achieved this.
I guess my definition of literature is something which will...
Don't think it will spoil anything for you and may certainly help some understanding. There were certainly a few I hadn't heard of and I've since checked up on them.

Excellent work mods and admins!

Boy I'm never goingto wolf down my food again:eek:
I recommend both books and authors if people ask me, but too many to have a single "one size fits all" favorite to recommend. It tends to be friends looking forward for something to read on holiday, in which case I'll recommend something short or lighter - like Alistair McCall Smith.
I have...
Immature discussion more like ... anyway serious point was what are the odds of someone outside the usual literary sources (authors, poets, playwrights) winning and who could they be?
First Oprah book = modern literary fiction genre; afraid you've lost me.
Are you saying they read something by Oprah and as a result won't read anything by a contemporary author again?
I'm not in a book group which is one of the reasons I'm here.
I'm ashamed to say I've not read any of the books on your list....not even the "classics":o
