    Children's Fantasy

My fave fantasy author is Garth Nix - he's so surreal :)

When And Where Do You Read?

I read everywhere! I also read in the bath :) . I'm reading a lot outside at the moment, because the weather has been quite good in the south of England. I read in bed before I go to sleep. On Saturdays and Sundays I have lazy lie-ins, where I'll also read. I always take a book in my...

    Anyone got any ideas?

Try Wilbur Smith - go for Birds of Prey. If he likes it, the series continues with Monsoon and (I think) Blue Horizon.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

The Gunslinger by Stephen King I, Lucifer by some guy with Duncan as his surname (brought after reading the opening line on this forum) Shopaholic and Sister (yes, yes, it's a chick lit book - so sue me :p ) Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

    Epic adventure tales?

For easy reading of adventure stories, then Wilbur Smith is a must. His River God/Seventh Scroll books are superb and gripping. A lot of fantasy novels feature travels and adventures - head over to the fantasy forum to see the authors that people enjoy.

Book of the Month Jul-Dec 2004

What about Jessica by Bryce Courtney? I got told that it was pretty talkworthy...

    Ink Magazine

That might explain why I couldn't find the latest issue in WHSmith! I really liked it and thought it had a chance of being relatively popular with book-lovers, but I guess it didn't help matters that WHSmith put it in a different location for every single issue. I would have thought...

Any really, really, really long books that you would recommend?

The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman - that's a hell of a long book! It's historical fiction covering the War of the Roses and Richard III's doomed reign. Excellent!

    Favorite Young adult authors

The Farthing Wood series was by Colin Dann, and I loved them as well. I was very keen on horses when younger (still am, to be truthful, but you don't find them a great deal in older fiction) so I constantly re-read the Jinny series by Patricia Leitch and the Silver Brumby books by Elyne...

    Vampire Novel Recommendations

Just gotta tell you about Charlaine Harris - she writes in a very similar vein to Laurell K Hamilton. Her first book is called 'Dead Until Dark' and it's an ongoing series. I loved these, once I got over the stumbling block that the main character was called Sookie Stackhouse :)

    Currently Reading

Done with Garth Nix (that's the best thing about kiddie's fiction - it's very fast to get through). Now reading a non-fiction book called The Tomb of God - it's like a treasure hunt through old parchment and works of art using esoteric geometry. Pretty cool :) . Linked to similar theories as...

What fiction book do you keep reading over and over?

Mine would be the Belgariad by David Eddings (yes, yes, I know it's more than one book). It was the first fantasy series I picked up, and I've been hooked on the genre since.

    Hi, I'm new!

Oh dear :o . And here I thought that just saying hi would have been a nice safe thread to start off on! What happened? Maybe I should just get in the deep end and start on the controversy ;)

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Ah, but Miles, because I am a confirmed sceptic, next on my list to buy once I've read Holy Blood & Holy Grail are the books that refute it. I like to stay open minded about this kind of thing. The only things we can be sure of when looking at historical events is that 1) we'll never know for...

    Books/Authors you hate

Well, that's the grand thing about us all having different tastes - we can keep multiple authors in their old ages, rather than just one.... You can keep your Tolkien, Gaiman and Pullman..... While I'll have Jordan, Martin, Eddings (some of his stuff - see above  ), Gemmell etc...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I've seen that kind of response a few times across the site and it perturbs me. So what if I liked the book? It's not as if I'm foisting it on folks - I'm just mentioning why I brought a recent book! I mean, I'm only a newbie, but in your terms and conditions for posting on the forums, it...

    To-read lists

Hi guys, I'm unusual in my group of friends in that I am a big reader, and many of them tease me because of the amount of books I have brought but remain unread (over 200 at last count :o ) Does anyone else have an obscenely long 'to-read' list? Whatcha got on it? Is there anything you've...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I just won Holy Blood & Holy Grail off ebay - I wanted to do some more reading around the Da Vinci Code, since it really fascinated me. Plus, I got What Might Have Been, which is a series of essays by historians on key events in history and what our world might be like if they had/hadn't...

    Question Game

Dan Brown - he's da man! What's the best thing about the job you do?

    Books/Authors you hate

I think the worst thing was knowing he's capable of so, so, so much more. The characterization was lazy and, in a lot of cases, lifted almost directly from previous books. I can cope with the similarities in characters between the Elenium/Tamuli and Belgariad/Mallorean because the stories are...
