I agree that it's fun to talk to people and get to know people. I'm sorry, but I find not a lot of value in talking about sporks (?), penguins or hobnobs. None of those things help me identify with a person or get to know them. Talking to them in threads like those Motokid starts or in the...
If I'm to have children I want them to take on the surname of my partner. Plus, I want to take on his surname as a signal of our commitment. So to me marriage is a logical step.
And I believe it is a way of standing up in front of close friends and family and saying that you are committing to...
Out of Gas was great too, although when I saw the opening scenes I was so confused and upset!!
I also really loved the episode that introduced Saffron - very, very funny.
Apparently the movie is going to expand on the tentative relationship between Mal and Inara, which is fantastic because...
I did not have the 'love at first sight' thing with the guy I'm engaged to. Instead I had the four years of good friendship and then a couple of tentative dates where we discovered a mutual passion on top of the friendship. So I was pretty sure that I could get on with the guy.
We've now...
And I put it to 12 in the yay camp. One of the reasons I only venture rarely into the general chat area of the forum is that you can never guarantee whether a thread you're generally interested in has gone OT.
I like OT in a certain context. I like it when it kind of stems from the original...
Hiya,
I was wondering who else caught this series on TV/DVD and is waiting with great excitement to the film 'Serenity' coming out later this year?
If you did watch it, what did you think? Favourite character? Favourite episode(s)?
Personally, I adored this and cannot for the life of me...
Hi there,
I was just wondering what proportion of 'old' fantasy people read to the 'new' authors popping up?
By old, I mean those who have been writing for years and years e.g. Michael Moorcock, Ursula le Guin, Fritz Lieber etc
And new would be people like Robert Jordan, George RR...
I've kind of had something like this. I joined a hobby-specific chatroom and encountered a guy through that. Our chat led to MSN-based flirting. I fell hard for him, and split up with my RL boyfriend because I believed that if I could fall for someone anonymous over the Net, then clearly he...
Because I access from work, I can't manage more than a brief read of posts, so trying to read and critique someone's work wouldn't be something I had the time to do.
Therefore, I tend not to read much of this section because I like to critique and wouldn't want to do a half-arsed effort -...
Hi all,
Just a question about trailers before movies (or, maybe, a couple)...
First up, do you like trailers before watching the main feature? Personally, I love them. I love the growly voice, the action, the teasing about films to come. I remember watching the first trailer for LotR: the...
Has anyone seen this?
I went last night - well, got dragged along really, since I wasn't in a cinema mood really - and I thought it was awesome.
I loved the slow-burn build-up to the action. I really liked that this character had reasons for becoming the Dark Knight, and the fact that he...
I hated them. Bored me to tears, personally. Struggled to get through them, thinking 'when are they going to get better?'
Ah well, at least I gave you a different perspective.
Rainbowgurl,
It's be easy enough to look back through old posts to find out what happened.
Personally, I think it should all be let lie now. Just cos you weren't around at the time doesn't mean you need to know now.
My friend is getting married on the Saturday it's out and is bemoaning the fact she can't read it til she flies on honeymoon. Personally, I'd have thought at that point she'd have more things to be thinking about!!
Anyhow, I'm having it delivered in the morning, so I'm tempted to wave it at...
When I said what I did, I was more thinking of the race of talking horses in the Aurian series, although they probably used 'mindspeech' as well.
Maggie Furey is someone who likes the idea of animals talking to her, in some way. :)
The one thing I might say against these books is that they can sometimes be pretty cliched and 'twee'. This author was a girl who loved horses (and other animals) and wanted them to talk to her. Would explain the sheer amount of talking creatures she has. Not annoying really (or not to me) but...
I really enjoyed this trilogy - probably more than the Aurian books. They were quick, light reading which made me smile a lot. I liked the characters and the arcs they went through over the course of the three books. I would recommend these.
My reading of the book was about the sixth re-read I have done of the book - I'm fairly enamoured of William Horwood's six Duncton books, and enjoy them thoroughly every time I read them.
I have to say on this re-read I did notice a few slow dips to the book, where I was able to skim on a bit...
I loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - one of my top books from recent years.
I've just finished Duncton Wood by William Horwood, which can be kind of counted as a fantasy book, I guess (very similar to Watership Down, in that the animals are humanised).
I have Haunted by Kelley...
How about revisiting an old friend/enemy in the form of one of David Eddings books?
Be bound to split opinion, to be honest, since there are those who love and those who hate him. And I'd love an excuse to re-read some of his classic series.
How about kicking off with The Diamond Throne...
