    Canadian, eh?

I read lots of "good" books, but I just finished As Birds Bring Forth the Sun and Other Stories by Alistair MacLeod, and it puts many other books I've read in shadow.

    George Orwell compendium

Google "orwell complete works" and the first result is www.george-orwell.org/. Google "orwell complete works amazon" and you learn that in text his works run to 8517 pages, and the 20 volume set is currently unavailable on Amazon. Yikes. Hate to know the price. Thankfully the e-version is free.

    Nature Literature

Just checked him out. He has lots of books I want to read. They seem to be geared towards young adults, but I'm a firm believer that good books are timeless and ageless.

    Graduate School, Research, Professor

The difficulty in getting into a program is one of the things worrying me. I know I'll be competing with people fresh out of a BA and who have A+ averages. I would basically like to be doing the type of personal study that would be equivalent to working on my MA and Ph.D now, but without...

    Nature Literature

I found an internet site that had links to nature and literature course syllabi. This is a large selection of books that are offered on various courses. I didn't select anything already listed in this thread. I also didn't read any of these yet, so I can't vouch for them. Professors of...

    Home pages

I use a blank page. I was using Google, but in Korea it always comes up as Korean Google because my browser is set to eliminate cookies and other junk every time I close it, so it forgets I want Google in English. Google must stay on the toolbar. I was using Yahoo, but it is too busy...

The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, or Harper's

Which magazine should I subscribe to? I just want to stay on top of things in a more intellectual way than from newspapers.

    Graduate School, Research, Professor

I think I had some of the fast trackers for profs when I was in university. Half my professors couldn't teach worth ****. Honestly, they shouldn't have been profs. I know research is important, but most of them would have been better off just writing their lectures, and having someone with an...

Thanks for the encouragement. It is hard to stay on track with a job, wife, and son, but I've managed to eliminate most of my bad time wasters, so I have quite a bit of reading time. I think the biggest thing getting me is that academics requires output. I should probably start some sort of...

    Graduate School, Research, Professor

I'm currently in Korea settling into marriage and fatherhood. In my college days I did a BA with a major in English Literature, and now I'm five years into the world of ESL teaching, but planning on going back to school in a few years. I want to get my MA and Ph.D in English Lit., and become a...

    Do kids need summer vacation?

Teachers need summer vacations. As to university students they need time to make some money to pay for school. Kids need a summer vacation for sure. All mine are pleasant memories. Here in Korea the kids have about six weeks summer and six weeks winter vacation. This saves on air...

A season in heaven : true tales from the road to Kathmandu

Does it read like literature or some burnout's diary? Sounds like a fun trip, but I can't imagine doing it now without losing my head.

    Books set in Middle Ages

Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse. You won't regret reading it. Well worth your time.

Gabriel García Márquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude

There was definitely some hardcore beauty going on with the last page.

Listening Point by Sigurd F. Olson. A beautiful collection of essays about nature. Olson finds his "listening point" in Lake Superior country, a place where he can get close to and "listen" to nature. The essays are his reflections on his time in that area. They cover themes such as nature as...

    Nature Literature

I looked that up, and it sounds amazing, but I'm a little scared to read it because it also sounds terrifying. Trees and lakes are okay, but the Pacific is a bit of a challenge.

    Nature Literature

Sounds interesting. I'm interested in that period. The only similar thing I've read seems to be a section of Hesse's The Glass Bead Game called the "Rainmaker".

    Nature Literature

Wilderness and the American Mind by Roderick Nash. A non-fiction book tracing the idea of wilderness in America from its beginnings. The book starts with an analysis of what "wilderness" actually is, and then moves through American history examining the idea along the way. If you were...

Gabriel García Márquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude

I would almost agree with you. When describing the book to my friend, I had to say something like "It's not really a good book, but I couldn't stop reading it, and it's just so beautiful." I'm not completely sure why it hit me so hard, but it did. I'm going to read it again sometime in the...

    what's your book shopping process?

Currently I buy all my books online. When I think I might want to read a book I put it on a list. When I make an order every month or so I buy as many of the books on my list as I can. The list is a great filter because often when I am ready to buy I don't really want the book anymore...
