I went on a book spree recently. I picked up:
Crime & Punishment
The Haunting of Hill House
We Have Always Lived In The Castle
The Turn of the Screw
Plum Island
A Brave New World
Water for Elephants
Now I need to figure out which one to read first, or maybe I should read one of the...
Hello and welcome. You'll enjoy your time here. One warning though, you may feel the need to purchase more books then you have room on your bookshelf for.
Have fun!
Looking back I admit I was really picky about what I put on the shelves. Not so much because I thought my kids would freak out or need therapy if they read a bad word or two. I just had decided opinions about what I considered literature and what I thought was junk.
My dislikes were the...
I was recently at a Borders and found the exception to the rule. The store manager recognized me (frequent flyer, I guess) and come over and said hello. We start chatting about what I was looking for and he spent some time telling me about his favorite authors and giving me some great...
Oh the luxury of reading in bed!! I don't get to do that much anymore. My husband has to get up for work at about 4 AM so he goes to bed ahead of my most nights. He can't sleep if I have the light on. I have to make due with an easy chair and a lamp in the living room. Occassionally I do...
My youngest is now 16 years old and my oldest 21 but I noticed a change in what scholastic was offering during their elementary school years. I remember what a thrill it was to get those scholastic book orders in when I was a kid. I owe Scholastic a big thanks for being there to wet my...
Miss Read's books are very, very old....I'd even say they are dated. But I enjoyed them nonetheless. They usually circle around a small village in England and there might be an event of some sort or they just span a period of time (summer in the village or maybe a blizzard...etc.)
They...
I second the recommendation for Shutter Island. It's been a long time since I've had an good "oh my God!!" moment.
It may not fit the criteria exactly but its a good read.
I'm hoping to get some recommendations for some good, cozy reads.
By "cozy" I mean those books that have a peaceful sweetness about them and make you want to curl up with hot chocolate and that make the world seem like a less ugly place.
I've read the Mitford series by Jan Karon and I've...
I'm working my way through The Great Deluge by Douglas Brinkley which is about the Katrina catastrophe. Its mind boggling when you realize just how much incompetence had to converge at one time and in one place to produce this debacle.
I am irritated today by idiot tenants who wait until new years eve day to call and want someone to come and fix something.
Who the heck am I going to get today to fix your stuff?!? Your garbage disposal hasn't worked for two weeks but today is the day you think it should get fixed...
I got "The Secret Life of Bees" and "An Irish Village Doctor" for my MIL.
The second and third books of the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica (dragon books) for my son.
And I bought "The Great Deluge" by Douglas Brinkley for myself.
Because I got through the gauntlet at Costco and Safeway and stocked up on yummies. The roast beast is resting in the frig. My Christmas bonus covered all our holiday expenses so I'm not even in the hole this year!:D
The presents are wrapped. I have a bottle of Merlot. I have the next...
Hmm, at the risk of getting my rear end handed to me for being too juvenile in my suggestions.... Since you enjoy alternate world/fantasy sorts of tales may I suggest Brian Jacques and his Redwall series?
I'm a forty-ish woman who read some of this series (which are abundant) aloud to my kids...
Watching Tony Shalhoub as Monk is one of my favorite ways to waste time. I love that character plus it's whodonit oriented.
I also love Johnny Depp. Its always interesting to see what he does with a character.
Ahah! Now I know why I got so emotional when Frodo said goodbye to his friends from the shire in the ROTK movie and got on the boat with the elves. I had read the books when I was very young and I didn't consciously remember they died in the end. I guess I had surpressed it and on some level...
Im in a desolate Hampshire estate where my half sister is being abused by her villain of a husband who I believe has only married her for her inheritance. I know he has a secret which once I know of it shall set us free from his vile machinations. If I could only find Anne.......
Yippeee, its Friday.:: Insert Snoopy happy dance:
This calls for a trip to the bookstore even though I really don't need any more books to add to the "must read" pile.
Don't look at me like that..I know I'm not the only one.
