Read the book first. Then at least you have the freedom to imagine the characters and settings any way you want to. I find that once you see the movie, you get "locked in" to how the director of the movie saw things and you can't imagine it looking any other way.
I thought 'Salem's Lot was the best of Stephen King's early works, with The Shining a close second. Both are better than Carrie IMO.
I just bought Foop! by Chris Genoa. I love silly books with clever, creative wordplay and so far it's filling the bill :) The only bad thing about it is it's...
Who's still watching? I AM!
Do you guys think that this really is the toughest Survivor ever, like Jeff is always saying? I think Africa could give this one a run for its money, remember how the Survivors were practically starving by the end of that one?
Usually Trump fires the PM in that situation, because she prevented him from firing the Toral. But I suppose Jennifer the Event Planner was the reason they lost the task.
Have you noticed how the other, blonde Jennifer is ALWAYS posing? She's always acting like some kind of model, makes you...
I read a tiny little novel for class in junior high called Call it Courage. In it, there was a yellow dog named Uri. I kid you not. Even the teacher noticed the way the author kept referring to the dog as "Uri, the yellow dog..."
Really, yellow popsicle? Here it's still freakin hot outside, today it was 88 degrees and *HUMID*. Pure craziness considering it's October. Makes you think about that global warming business a little harder.
Mainly I'm motivated to reread stories if they feature characters I really liked. It's like visiting old friends, and if the story is well-written you learn new things about them while rereading.
Some of my favorite re-reads are:
Harry Potter
Stephen King's better novels (Dark Tower...
Great point, Abecedarian. I've heard that lots of people only read selected parts of the Bible, and that people rarely read the whole thing (and even more rarely read the whole thing start to finish).
I read a wonderful book set in Africa called The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. It's set in Botswana and it blends mystery, humor, and slice-of-life aspects, all brought together with a charming main character. Mma Ramotswe is the head of her own detective agency in...
If you liked The Giver, you could try Brave New World by Huxley. It has many of the same themes and it's not too difficult to read. It has that same "utopian" theme where the utopia is maintained by a terrible force. It may be a little harder to read but if you got through Da Vinci Code you...
Does anyone here read them? I got hooked on them from my sister and I think they're a lot of fun, very funky and independent. My favorites are Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Charby the Vampirate and most recently Comedity.
My total favorite is Pillsbury's Fast & Healthy cookbook. It has lots of easy, healthy recipes that usually take about 30-40 minutes to prepare, start to finish. It includes lots of vegetarian options along with meat, and has very tasty stir-fry recipes. It also has little blurbs with helpful...
Maybe everyone here thought this was obvious, but I thought it was really clever how Kingsolver had a cool allegory thing going, with the father of the family and his relationship with his wife and daughters, and how it represented the European (Belgian) relationship with the Congo. Did you...
