Here are my July reads:
The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
The Green Mile series by Stephen King (reread)
I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan
Twenty Tellable Tales by Margaret Read MacDonald
Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit, and...
Thursday, you might want to think about moving to the U.S.! In our public libraries, professional librarians are not just allowed to, but a preferred choice when staffing the reference desk. There are a fair number of library assistants as well, but in my experience they handle basic...
Considering all the series I've read, it seems almost silly to say Harry Potter... but I know deep down it's true. If Stephen King's DT series had continued to display the same quality as books 1-4, that might have beat out Harry Potter, but alas.
Jennifer Crusie writes some really good ones with non-virgin female leads, set in contemporary times. Try Welcome to Temptation - you'll love it. It made me laugh so hard, and the story really held my interest too.:D
I didn't just move into a fantastic new apartment last weekend, and it certainly wasn't twice the size of the old one I shared with my husband. It doesn't have a balcony, a fireplace, a valuted ceiling... none of that :p
And, I'm not at all nervous about my job interview tomorrow.
Nomadic Myth,
I second Gem's encouragement and well wishes! About your journal problem: Try browsing in the Directory of Open Access Journals. This is a collection of scholarly journals in all kinds of topics that are available in full text for free. I learned about this in some of my...
The only other book I've read by Bryson so far, besides Short History, is In a Sunburned Country. It's about Australia and really, really great. Although, being in NZ and so close to Australia, you might not find it quite as interesting.
My mom also read Notes from a Small Island and liked...
I like to sprinkle my reading diet with non-fiction by reading just one book now and then. My favorites are travel memoirs in the vein of Bill Bryson (Monkeycatcher: Try Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawk if you need something similar to Bryson:D ) but I also like history and reading...
Monkeycatcher,
Catch-22 was a book I tried and failed to read, too. For me it wasn't the level of concentration that was the problem--it was the humor. It wasn't funny to me, it was actually just depressing and disappointing. I didn't engage with any of the characters either (maybe for...
I cried at the end of Tandia by Bryce Courtenay, at the end of Harry Potter 6, during Dark Tower 7... hmm. Those are the books that spring to mind.
I cry during movies too. The Joy Luck Club is a sure bet for tears. I cried during Hope Floats as well, and I get a little teary every...
I completely agree, mel. I was assigned Under the Volcano for school, and even though it was required reading I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I just faked my way through the portions of the class relating to it.
lol raffaellabella!!
As soon as I saw this thread I was going to post about Emma, from Jane Austen's novel. God I couldn't stand her. What a whiny little snot. I could only take about 45 pages of her and then I had to stop reading.
When characters are only annoying to other characters...
