Try The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston. Most of it goes along the lines of The Joy Luck Club, but it also includes the REAL story of Fa Mu Lan, which is ever so much more interesting and deep than the Disney version.
Dude! Spoiler tags! :( (I haven't read the fifth book yet.)
Anyway. I agree with Monkeycatcher that it's funny that Ayla (and Jondalar I guess) are portrayed as having invented practically every major invention of the period. But I guess the point is to show the reader how those things...
I don't know if I feel guilty about this exactly, but...
Jennifer Crusie's books Welcome to Temptation, Bet Me, and Crazy for You. They are such fun popcorn reads and the only romance novels I've ever read that keep the cheesy factor to a minimum. I guess I don't talk about them as much...
I just finished it today and I liked it. I too thought it was gripping. I also thought it was super creepy when I can't help being unsatisfied by an ending like that, though. I think it fit well in a technical sense but emotionally I would have liked to know what happened immediately afterward.
I have a working knowledge of French, meaning I can do basic conversation and reading, and I can translate most anything with a dictionary. It's not as good as it should be, probably, considering I took like 8 years of French in school and have been there twice (for a two-week period and a...
Thanks so much, Kook and Still! Actually my fiance got me several varieties of tea for my birthday too, so I did have a nice hot drink to enjoy while reading :D
Thanks, everyone! I have been having a lovely day, reading the books my fiance bought for me (Harry Potter textbooks Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages) and then going to Border's to buy even more books! :D :D :D My fiance also made us big breakfast burritos...
If you have more of a postmodern fiction taste, try White Noise by Don DeLillo. I think his style of writing is very intelligent, thought-provoking, and best of all, accessible. He has interesting themes in there about fear and death and lots of smart, witty commentary on middle American life...
Tidal wave. I am NOT a good swimmer, and drowning is a big fear of mine. (Yes I am catlike in that respect as well :p )
If you could only have ONE pizza topping on your pizzas for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I loved:
Star Wars episodes IV, V, and VI
Jurassic Park
The Matrix
Contact
Vanilla Sky
Serenity (actually, the Firefly TV series was better)
Stargate
The Terminator
V for Vendetta (less science fiction, more dystopia, but oh well.)
A lot of these were fast-paced...
More and more now it's starting to be called "library and information science" instead of just library science. Glasgow might have something along those lines. And another thing, they might not offer a library program for lower levels of university students - at my school, you can only get a...
tartan skirt, it will all be ok! Libraries are great places to work and a great place for your first job. My first job was in a library too and look at me now, I'm about to graduate with a master's in library science!:D In my experience, libraries are fantastic, supportive places to work in...
