How about Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhythem's series (e.g. The Bone Collector which was made into a movie)?
One military book I read last year and really liked was Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood by Donovan Campbel
I enjoyed (memoir):
Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death and Sleepless Nights in a Surgeon’s First Years by Michael Collins. I'd also read his 2nd book Blue Collar Blue Scrubs: The Making of a Surgeon which is actually set before the first book. The first book was about his intern/residency...
I moved to Australia as a teenager. English is not my first language. A friend introduced me to Christopher Pike's books and I'd be hooked my murder/mystery/thrillers since. His books really got me interested in reading English books (which were a struggle previously.)
Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy by Jostein Gaarder?
i have to admit tho, i started reading this book many years ago, and haven't finished yet. i read the library copy, and as i was reading, i thought this is a book i need my own copy to read so i can make notes etc (e.g...
i bumped into this website by chance - be patient to load all the pictures. beautiful libraries! i wish i live closer to them all!
Librophiliac Love Letter: A Compendium of Beautiful Libraries | Curious Expeditions
I forgot, I read this also - this time it is a daughter/father book, but still on meth.
Loss of Innocence: A Daughter's Addiction. A Father's Fight to Save Her by Ron Clem (Author), Carren Clem
I'd read Come Back: A Mother and Daughter's Journey Through Hell and Back by Claire Fontaine & Mia Fontaine - a real life story. Mia was the daughter who was addicted to meth. The book alternates between Claire's and Mia's perspectives.
I'd also read Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through...
sorry i didn't have a chance to get back to this thread until now.
my first language is chinese.
some dennis lehane's books are made into movies (i haven't seen them tho) - Mystic River (have the DVD but haven't watched yet), Gone, Baby, Gone. A new one coming out is Shutter Island which i...
one that came to mind (since I just read it last year) was Obedience: A Novel by Will Lavender. Review on amazon isn't that good, but i thought it was okay. i was after a quick read (and i like murder/mystery/thriller type of books) and not literature type of books so it served its purpose.
english is not my first language either, but my english has improved a lot after i start reading more english books - not the ones the school assigned, but the ones that interest me like murder/mystery :) and i love the tv show 'numb3rs'.
one book that came to mind is The Oxford Murders by...
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
* it's on an island :)
* the main character IS a detective, but i love the plot
* the language/writing style does take some getting used to, but if you're looking for good plot/twists, then i recommend it.
I enjoy reading mystery/murder (eg Jeffery Deaver, Patrician Cornwell etc), but a lot of times, I easily forget the plot after I read them, since I just read them for fun and not really trying to learn anything from them as I would from a non-fiction book.
But Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane...
I am more into the CSI type:
I enjoy Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series (have you seen The Bone Collector?)
Others I enjoy:
Tess Gerritsen (Jane Rizzoli series)
the older Patricia Cornwell books (Kay Scarpetta series)
Kathy Reichs (Temperance Brennan series)
Stuart Woods (Stone...
