How do you choose the book you'll read next ?

Definately! Usually a selection of around five-ten that I intend to read soon. Usually with a large pile of books spread over the nearest available surface while I check out the back cover and first page to see what catches my fancy! The pile of books is then added to every time I finish...

    Your most Treasured Book

I have a really old paperback copy of The Fellowship of the Ring, it was my mother's as a child and is now in several pieces and covered with sellotape, but reading the old yellowy pages always recaptures for me the feeling of first reading this book as a child - something which I find...

    Hardcovers or paperbacks?

Paperbacks every time! They're easier to handle and carry around and much nicer to read (don't ask me why!) Even collectable books I prefer in a nice paperback unless there is a particularly good or maybe an illustrated hardback edition.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

HBinjection - I'm not sure what awards he has won but Stephen Fry is a great actor and comedian and also a novelist (though I'm not familier with his writing). He starred in 'Wilde' as Oscar Wilde and appeared in Blackadder (a classic British comedy - I can't get enough of it!) and the BBC...

    Interview with the Vampire

I've got to agree with you both about the casting - especially Armand - his character seemed very different in the film too (I don't know if you've read The Vampire Armand? I found it such heavy going and had to give up, unusual for me). Dawn - I liked The Vampire Lestat much more than...

2003 Book of the Month Choices

Thanks Darren :) I like the idea of a 'group read' and discussion and am keen to read January's choice (though I don't expect to be finished in time to join the discussion - my 'to read' list is growing all the time!) 'Life of Pi' sounds like a good one - I've heard a lot about it but haven't...

    Poppy Z. Brite: Lost Souls

Interesting is a good word for it! I was actually very disappointed in the book as I read it, I'd perhaps been expecting something different. But it stuck in my mind; from thinking in an exasperated way "What was the point of that?", I started actually asking myself, "What was the point of...

To start things off: Favorite books

I can't believe I didn't mention Peter Pan! A true classic and one of my favourite books ever! Also Winnie the Pooh (not just for children!) and Alice in Wonderland. And I remember enjoying Orwell's Animal Farm as a child - I thought it was a great story about a bunch of farmyard animals! :D

    Harry Potter 5 Released June 21, 2003!!!

Can't wait! Apparantly it's one third longer that the Goblet of Fire. Have you seen the spoilers? From the Bloomsbury website: The beginning Later in the novel, J K Rowling writes: !!!!! :D edit: :o I just realised that all this information is in the link from Darren's...

Early Readers (Pre-teen & young adult)

Harry Potter! Seriously, I think it's wonderful how many have started reading because of the recent hype surrounding Harry Potter (of course I'm talking about older readers too!). I agree with encouraging early readers to read anything and everything they show an interest in. You might...

    Interview with the Vampire

I saw this film years ago and loved it - I don't know how many times I watched it and fell in love with Louis! After reading the books (and deciding that Lestat was the one for me :D!) I became picky about the changes made in the film and enjoyed it less, though it's still one of my favourites...

    Hamlet

It served a similar purpose for my sister! I bought this video on a recommendation, last year, and loved it - it really does emphasise the humor in Shakespeare.

    Macbeth

DaveB, thanks for the info about the Roman Polanski version, I haven't seen this one and had considered buying it, perhaps I'll give it a miss now! I think my red-haired Macbeth is going to remain a mystery; it's a shame as I love red hair!

do you keep a book list?

I also keep a bit of a list of books I want to read, or that were recommended to me. I usually check them out at Amazon & read the reviews, then add them to my shopping basket. I didn't realise that they empty the basket every few months until one day I went to log on and all my books were gone...

    Watership Down

I love this film, it's probably one of the best book adaptations I have seen. I remember seeing it as a child; I hated the part where the rabbits are geting crushed as the tunnels are filled in, and the horrifying image of the red fields - surprisingly effective for animation.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

HBinjection - was the audiobook you heard read by Stephen Fry? They really are great to listen to - he does a wonderful reading of all the characters. I thought the film was great too - though obviously not as good as the book! I found that the first film felt a little flat - perhaps, in...

    Hello everyone!

Hi Prolixic, great to find another Tolkien fan! It must be wonderful to be reading to your children and introducing them to the wonderful world of literature that gives us so much pleasure. I hope they all grow up to be avid readers! :D Kaz I've finished Chocolat now - what a lovely book...

    A Belated Introduction

Hi Wynter (great name!) I'm even newer than you, I only found this forum a couple of days ago! Hope to see you around :):D

    Piers Anthony

I've found that this is often a highly controversial topic. Piers Anthony - a great writer of original work, an average writer of mainly light fantasy or a slightly twisted pervert who's writing borders on pornography (believe me - I've seen him described in this way!)? Personally, I love...

    Poppy Z. Brite: Lost Souls

I've just finished reading this book, highly recommended to me by a friend. I don't really know what to say about it - has anyone else read it? It seems to be a coming of age tale with no end - a story of vampires, blood, horror and the fleeting intensity of teenage love. It's the kind of...
