    America being ridiculous...again

No reason to be snippy, novella. The 18 was from the original USA Today article that the BBC article was taken from. If it was revised by another publication, that's fine.

For everyone, for anyone, for someone...

Yep. :) It can be nudged by nurturing one way or the other, but a gentle person can seldom be moved to violence despite training, and malicious people alway have to struggle against it despite training. I can tell from your tone that you don't agree, so we'll let it lie, I think... Cathy

For everyone, for anyone, for someone...

Ah, but see -- this goes into a "nature vs. nurture" argument, bobby. I believe in "nature". Therefore, nurturing doesn't hardwire itself, and outside influences can usually override biases, fears, sorrows, etc., if compelling enough. :) Cathy

    Hello Again

Welcome, RichardLowry! I haven't done any military work. My historicals are generally western U.S., turn-of-the-century things. The rest of my novels are fantasy/paranormal and my articles tend to be outdoor or legal pieces. My husband is a WWII buff, so I might have to pick up your book for...

    A wind blowing

Also welcome, neonumb! Always nice to see another writer come on board! :D This is a nice, melancholy piece. Overall, I agree with watercrystal's comments. I'd add a few more: Since he later goes downstairs to his apartment, the words "of the building he lived in" could probably be...

For everyone, for anyone, for someone...

A solution to what, watercrystal? Life? LOL! That's quite simple, but seldom done. The solution to life is "choice." Life is what you make of it. Your decisions in every movement of every day can create an entire new reality. Take the money for the rent and hop a plane. Walk out of...

    Do you read non-fiction?

Sapper41, you might want to take a look at the series about the US Armed Forces. They're oversized, coffee-table books about the Marines, or the Army or Navy. Bought the Navy one for my father-in-law, and the Marine one for my brother-in-law. There are some super first hand accounts from WWII...

    Titles

I'm TERRIBLE with titles! We've renamed our latest paranormal three times, and I'm still only lukewarm about it. Sigh... I have to struggle to create blurbs and loglines, too. :( Cathy

    Who likes Blackadder?

Where can I find Blackadder or Red Dwarf on video (or DVD?) I just picked up Fawlty Towers -- also a HUGE favorite! The DVD set has outtakes from the series, which are too funny for words. Cathy

Would a Wizard by any other name still be as strong?

Carrion becomes carrion. Perfect! No iguanas in my stories. Only Komodo dragons, so feel free! :D Cathy

Would a Wizard by any other name still be as strong?

Would a Wizard by any other name still be as strong?

And here are some synonyms for "magician" from my handy-dandy Roget's: thaumaturgist conjurer necromancer magus archimage theurgist enchanter siren diabolist wizard witch jinni (or djinn or genie) Comus spellbinder enthraller ensorceller incantator Hope some of these help!

Would a Wizard by any other name still be as strong?

Do they need to be existing professions or callings, or can we play around so long as the word invokes the meaning? Here are a couple for animal raiser: Feitchist (to fetch) Animage (animal caller)

Qualities of a great short story

A short story, to me, is a slice of time that is a crisis or event within a person's life. Whether it's as simple as having the encountering the "perfect" meal, or solving an ages-old mystery, a good story makes you aware that there IS a life to be interrupted. Surprising character depth can...

    Who likes Blackadder?

I agree -- except for the holiday turkey episode. Definitely a tea out the nose moment! :D

    Agatha Christie: The Hollow

Ah! Murder after hours is very good! Thanks, dele! This is one of those books that really didn't need Poirot to solve it. It was almost as though he was thrown in at the last minute, because most of the book had developed by the time he arrived. But it was a very good book. I liked the...

    America being ridiculous...again

 Sorry, don't understand the question. Talking about when? The ending quote? Cathy

    i need a title!!!

Poem #1 - A Hug to Give you Money Poem #2 - A Prayer to Bless Our Love Poem #3 - Not Done Loving You A couple of quick notes: You have a few misspelled words that sound alike, but change the meaning, such as "Let me not brake his heart." Brake is to stop (like a car), instead of Break -...

    Who likes Blackadder?

LOVE BLACKADDER! (Well, all except for the WWI soldiers season. That one just didn't grab me as well.) Any Red Dwarf fans? I wish I could find it on tape or CD. Only caught part of one season, but loved it! Cathy
