    Cuddly Floppy Eared Pussies.

Y'know, Billy, I don't think I've ever read this version of the story! Sounds like an offering by Douglas Adams...

New Here and hoping for better

Hi, JasonOrillas! You'll find a lot of strongly held beliefs here about books and other things, but the Moderators generally will close a thread if it gets too obnoxious. Of course, being New Hare, make sure that you tell SillyWabbit how much you LOVE penguins... Welcome! Cathy

    Reading in the Bathtub

Only paperbacks for the tub! Hardbacks are too difficult to manage without getting the pages wet, and I hate to do that to a high-dollar book! (As for rubber ducks, can't say as I ever owned one. Had one of those cool baking soda subs as a kid, though! And diving frogmen! Really sorry...

    Where Did Everyone Go?

Didn't you see the little bat wings on the penguins?? They're a special hybrid penguin/bat!

    Been a long time

So sorry for your loss, Rainbowgurl. :( I know just how you feel. My mom passed away in a similar manner. It's just such a surprise and then you feel sort of numb. Hang in there!

    Where Did Everyone Go?

I'm still here, but don't know if I was entertaining or annoying! After all, warm_enema condemned me to purgatory in his world. But I was there was Ou Be, so I considered myself quite fortunate! And just because I feel like it --- <ahem!> LONG LIVE THE PENGUINS!

    Hilarious Reads

For similar slap-stick style humor, you might try Patrick McManus. He does outdoor humor, but they're very tongue-in-cheek from both a child's POV and later as an adult. Pat Wray is another super American outdoor humorist. There's a story of his in the back of every Field & Stream.

    Marketing books

Most independent book stores (at least in America, but I don't know where you are) will allow consignment of books directly from the author. With a consignment agreement, you provide the books at a 40% discount off list. When the book sells, they pay you 10% back, and keep 30% for themselves...

Is there a "good" self-published book?

How about "The Christmas Box" by Richard Paul Evans? It was originally self-published as a gift for his daughter and then thousands of copies were printed at his local copyshop until it was finally picked up by Simon & Schuster. Another one is "Going for It" by Karen Quinones, who sold over...

Amazing Picture Books - know of any?

I strongly recommend the "Good Dog, Carl" books, illustrated by Alexandra Day. There's a whole bunch of them, and the graphics are superb! Here's a link: Good Dog Carl

Starting a Book Club at work - good/bad idea?

*At work*, I'd say no. That will lead to a bunch of problems in the long-run, even if you get permission. We tried similar things in our office and while everyone worked hard to avoid it, problems included people not cleaning up after themselves, so that early arrivers the next day found the...

    Reading for knowledge through fiction

Something else to consider is to read older books which weren't "historical" at the time, but contemporary. For example, "Huckleberry Finn" or "An Old Fashioned Girl" are splendid examples of what is now considered historical fiction because they delved into the world as it existed at the time...

    How good is your reading?

No, you missed the line above the statements: The tests normally make such a statement so you only draw from what's printed. Because of this, your only known facts are those which aren't offered as answers, so d) is the proper choice.

    Military Sci-Fi

If you don't mind a little romance thrown in, Susan Grant's "2176" series is terrific! Five female pilots kidnapped in today's world and frozen to be reawoken in 2176 because they're the only ones who remember how democracies operated and are willing to fight for it.

    Book suggestions?

You might also try Tony Hillerman's Navajo mysteries. I think the latest one on the shelf is "Skeleton Man". It's in my TBR pile. He's gotten tons of awards for staying true to history. There's usually art or archeology or something new to learn. The last one, "The Sinister Pig" taught me...

    Well met!

Welcome, Sell Sword! Do you enjoy Lovecraft or Barker?

    Reading Comprehension Exams

Just as a curiosity point, where does one get a copy of the GRE and MCAT? I'm a bit of a masochist and always loved taking tests...

Plagiarism vs. influence vs. parameters of a common subject

As Ashlea said, it might well be attributed to "random coincidence". For example, my writing has been compared to Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane by many, many people. However, I've never once read something they've written, even after being told that. Why not? Originally, because I...

    Does anyone know this book?

It might also be "Timeline" by Michael Crichton. The paperback cover was blue, I remember. The plot is very similar.
