"The essay from which this collection takes its title was my contribution to a seminar about Indian writing in English held in London during the Festival of India in 1982."
It will happen.
It's just too dang cheap not to.
I recall when CDs first came out. People said the vinyl iridescent LP would stick around for at least another 10 years. It barely lasted 10 months.
And yes, much hullabaloo has been made over the ebook. And it keeps getting aborted and aborted...
The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. It is the sole...
I enjoyed Everyman though it wasn't exactly a life-affirming romp. It traces a nameless man's illnesses. The times in his life of good health get reduced to only a sentence or two. Not an upper, but a very good read nonetheless.
Heh... IQ tests are usually funny... though I don't think this was meant as a serious test since it essentially involves a visual illusion.
It was fun to stare at the rotating image nonetheless...
Wow... I haven't heard of any of those. Either I need to pay more attention or books just aren't receiving much media attention these days... likely both...
I was going to pretend to quit this morning, "a GREAT opportunity came up that I just can't refuse... it's been great working here... etc., blah blah" but by the time I made it in I lost the gumption. Nice thought, though.
Give the print editions about 50 years to go completely out of style. Then collectors may want them for novelty factor. Definitely a sign of tides wafting a different way. I can't imagine owning, much less using, a set of bulky omnious encyclopedias. I want to search, I want to cross-search, and...
I check out anything I can from the library. The expense, space, and waste of having shelves upon shevles crammed with books I won't read again makes this necessary. Unfortunately, I read a lot of obscure books on philosophy and other such brain rotting topics that no library in their right mind...
Literature needs a renaissance to create writers that are "great" outside the rather myopic walls of academia. It needs to be relevant again and not just to people in college English programs or to literary critics. Literature has to find a way to offer something unobtainable by other more...
Over time I'm guessing that more and more publishers will go electronic because the cost savings are just too intense to ignore. Analogous to businesses migrating to the web, it seems inevitable. If this means more and more titles become available and publishing opens up to more "risky"...
I really haven't given them a fair trial. When reading I like to pause or reread passages or just take some time to think about a paragraph. Though audio players now have pause buttons and other features it doesn't seem as flexible as text for intensely dynamic reading. I have listened to audio...
I'm also in the "awaiting more evidence" category. The problem is, it's easier to prove that God does exist (i.e., someone finds God and says "SEE! There's God! I told you!") than it is to prove God doesn't exist. Not finding God remains an argument for many (and not a good argument) that we...
