Do you like to read with background noise, or need complete silence?

Preferably, I read in the silence of a nice quiet room; but if the danceteria downstairs kicks in I learn to cope.

    My Current TBR List...

The Alchemist - a quick fairy tale-esque read with lots of "life lessons" embedded. I enjoyed it for what it was. I would put it somewhere around 7-8/10.

    amazon used books

Every used book I've purchased through Amazon has appeared as advertised. I can't say the same for E-bay, however, where I've received books with trench-like creases unmentioned in the product blurb. As mentioned, but towards the top end, and if something seems too cheap, it might be filled with...

    Worthy re-reads....

I find most of Italo Calvino worth re-reading; his language (even in translation) inspires different interpretations with every read. This is especially true for "On a Winter's Night a Traveler" and "Invisible Cities." Apart from Calvino, I've read Slaughterhouse-Five about a dozen times. Not...

    Who Are The Writers?

I try to write. My writing has appeared in some small magazines, community books, and academic contexts, but nothing major. Like many others here time keeps dwindling away while my brain rushes with neuronic flurry. I have dozens of ideas not yet codified in any comprehensible way. Occasionally...

The last sentence in the book you're currently reading.

"Interest in Spinoza is perhaps stronger than it has ever been and historical, textual, and philosophical work on Spinoza continues to appear at a rapid rate." This isn't as exciting with non-fiction, is it? :D

What are you listening to Right now?

松浦亜弥 ー 桃色片思い 日本の音楽です。 If you want to hear and see it, here's the video. It's, ummm... not for everyone... The song.

    Favorite Manga of all time

Let's see if this dusty old thread still has some life in it... I'm just diving into the world of Manga, and I'm shocked at how entertaining it is. Here's what I've read: 1. Ranma 1/2 2. Love Hina 3. Sgt. Frog 4. Urusei Yatsura

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

Before grad school I read 30 - 40. During grad school I read about 20 (not including school texts). Now that I'm out of grad school I'm back to 30 - 40. I always try to throw some thick and turgid ones in the mix, so they should count as 2 or 3 books, but I don't cheat.

The last sentence in the book you're currently reading.

I didn't count the appendices, so this is the last line of the final full chapter: "(I hear, by the way, that the Mexican peso is now very strong again, and that you can get a hell of an interest rate south of the border.)"

    NPR summer book reading list

Hm. Nothing there fires the pleasure neurons. Besides, my reading list is already longer than Don Juan's list of conquests. And my list of conquests is... well... not so impressive...

    I don't use bookmarks.

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

Wow. Thank you everyone. This thread will save me countless hours of reading books that EVERYONE shoves in my face and INSISTS that I read: DaVinci Code, Harry Potter, etc. Something deep down inside me (my literary guts, perhaps?) gurgles and spews everytime I consider reading one of these. No...

    Pirates 3: At World's End

The last two Pirates movies were pretty forgettable. Number three was waaaaay too long. Edit edit edit. The scene with the multiple Johnny Depps gave me a splitting headache and the ending with the Calypso character just made me go "ehhhh." But of course they set it up for a 4th by showing Jack...

    Last seen...

Last night I watched Pan's Labyrinth. Good and freaky. If you want strange nightmares about facist Spain than don't delay. Tonight I watched "The Dinner Game," a great French comedy about jerks who make fun of other people. Both were subtitled. I guess I like to read even while watching...

What are your plans for the Summer?

I finished all the quals for my Master's so I'll wait for that expensive piece of paper to arrive in the mail. Apart from that I'll read. I've read 10 books in the past few months. Sweet freedom!! :D

    Cynthia Lennon: John

Are you referring to "A Twist of Lennon?" If so, I read it years ago. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a fanatic fan. I was and I still didn't care for it overall.

Dee Brown: Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee

A few years back, I stepped onto the Wounded Knee battlefield in South Dakota two days after I finished reading this book. It's an appropriately stark place and fits the tone of Dee Brown's prose as she descrives the ghost dance and the final battle. Sad heartbreaking stuff. But by far the most...
