The problem with introduction-type threads is that they're pretty much one-sided. Not very interactive. And for whatever reason, some people don't feel comfortable introducing themselves in an internet forum--- privacy issues, being uneasy in the spotlight, blank page syndrome, whatever...

Or Michel Faber's Under the Skin. It's controversial and very well-written.
