Going to start a subscription to Bloomberg Businessweek

Publishers are practically giving print magazines away now. 26 weeks for $20. How can I refuse? About a year and a half ago Barrons offered an introductory price of $52 for a year, (Barron's is a weekly too). So how could I refuse? When the year was up they wanted me to renew at the regular...

I knew I had a lot of books but now I know how many.

This site makes me feel unworthy. I once saw a thread titled, "post pics of your library". I thought I would like to do it, but then I saw the pics and immediately realized what a piker I am. In all fairness though, I've lost/lent out/thrown out many dozens of books. I even had some confiscated...

Any ideas on how to get noticed.

The traditional publishing route still rules. The idea that you can hack out a novel on your word processor, upload it to Amazon and wait for the cash and acknowledgment to come rolling in is a myth. It's attractive to the lazy writer who does not want to go through the process of query...

    Where do books take you?

To the office of the cruise ship line that owned the Titanic the day after it sank. To a hospital near the front line in France during WW I. Both in "A Good Woman" by Danielle Steel. To a dank, mildewy CIA interrogation room in "Pursuit of Honor" by Vince Flynn. To my own future...

    Book Related Careers

I'm an aspiring author. Laziness and poor writing skills are hampering my ambitions, but I'm still hopeful. Can you network well? Make contacts with publishing big wigs? Perhaps a career as a lit agent is in the cards for you. Opening a bookstore seems like a scary proposition to me. I...

Do you let an author's personal views affect your reading choices?

Vince Flynn writes the Mitch Rapp series, about a CIA agent battle the evil forces of the world. I have only read one book but he uses the main character to project his own political views on abortion. I disagree with his view on abortion, but that is not why I'm reluctant to read any more of...

    Recently Finished

Pursuit of Honor by Vince Flynn. A spy thriller about the battle between the CIA and Muslim extremists. I didn't realize when I first picked it up, but it's part of the Mitch Rapp series. I don't usually read fiction, but I chose this one because it's by a NYT best selling author and because...

JK Rowling being sued for plagiarism

I believe JK Rowlilng when she says she's never heard of the author and never read the books. This is just a money grab, plain and simple. If I'm not mistaken, the UK allows for defendants to collect their legal fees from plaintiffs if the plaitiffs lose. I certainly hope so.

What do you want in a bookstore?

A bad bookstore I've never seen, so I don't know what separates a good one from a bad one. Many people have complained about the owner of one of the used bookstores here as being rude, but he has never been rude to me.

    Best place to read

Prone on the couch is my favorite reading position. In the bed at bedtime is my second. No drinking or eating while reading, I don't want anything to distract me. I only sit upright to read when I'm reading the newspaper. Sitting upright for long periods of time maked me fidgety and uncomfortable.

When should you throw a book away?

I've thrown away books in the past because I didn't like their content, but I won't do that again. A book would have to be damaged for me to throw it away. Even my old "QBasic for Dummies" is staying. It's sure to become a collectors item and make me millions of dollars.

The Hall of Fame (Thread Nominees)

First time I've seen this thread. I didn't click on the link in the thread where the self-published author tried to promote her book, but I can't help but wonder if it was a Publish America book. PA is truly a horrible orginization. Many PA authors are like that one, terrible writers that are...

NYT ready to charge online readers

Rupert Murdoch has been on the "make-em-pay" on the internet bandwagon for a while, I think the NYT is only trying this after hearing Murdoch scream about it. Maybe they think if Murdoch's going to do it, it must be a viable business model. When I first got on the internet in 1996, you had...
