ja9, I am looking forward to Cider House. That is your whole list? What I posted is just what I have checked out of the library. My list is pages long :D :D I can only hope I live long enough to read them...all.;)
I don't read a lot of non-fiction but some of my favorites have been:
Leap of Faith by Queen Noor- she is an American woman who became the Queen of Jordan
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer- about an ascent of Mount Everest
Alive by Piers Paul Read- plane crash in the Andes
Between a Rock and a...
I just returned from the library. I brought my son for storytime, but you know me, I can't not get a book (or four  ).
To my list, I must add:
A Shadow on the Sun- Richard Matheson
The Cider House Rules- John Irving
Everything is Illuminated, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly...
Fire- Sebastian Junger (current read)
Granny D: Walking Across America in My 90th Year- Doris Haddock with Dennis Burke
Grave Sight- Charlaine Harris
Secrets of Lost Empires- Michael Barnes et al.
Kook- My neice has other interests beyond reading, like dancing and cooking. And she has a few close friends, my oldest DD included, that appreciate her intelligence. In fact, she's been a major influence on my oldest DD's interest in reading. She's never been told to hide her intelligence...
I just think that there is a trend (in the states at least) toward mediocrity, unless it is super macho athleticism. Don't excel at anything, just do barely enough to get by and anything more is kissing butt. I've told my neice that the kids who tease her about being smart are idiots and later...
I've had experience all over the spectrum. When I was about 12 or so, I was the new kid at a school with a large population of highly intelligent students (it was a "magnet" school). Unfortunately for me, I was so incredibly nerdy that even the nerds refused to hang out with me, so I spent...
Oh, what a timely thread! I've been hunting for a good small book light. Hubby usually goes to sleep before I do and I think the reading lamp that we have clamped to the headboard between us is too much light and disturbs his sleep. I am going to try looking in a craft store or catalog...
My hubby will pass a remark my way, but nothing really scathing. He thinks I read too much and I think he reads too little. ABC has it though, I think that readers, in general are a curious lot, and instead of being lonely, thanks to reading, I am never lonely or bored. I always have someone...
That is the same here. We're making it on the $25,000 to $30,000 a year my hubby makes. It is all a matter of priorities. I drive a 16 year old van we bought from hubby's sister, hubby drives a 10 year old truck, also bought second hand. Most of the kids clothes are hand-me-downs from...
I have a few more questions. What if during labor, she wants ice chips, or the doctor needs to tell her to push or not to push? Is she just S.O.L.? Or are they going to come up with hand signals before the whole thing happens?
That's what makes Tom (and IMO, scientology) sound so ridiculous. He's never been seriously depressed, and never given childbirth, yet here he has all these "words of wisdom" about them.
YES!! They get just as excited over new happenings as I do (sometimes even more, I think). And hero worship can be a handy tool, too. (look at big brother using the potty, you can do it just like him!)
