I am enjoying the Gates of Rome by this author so I will endeavour to read the books you mention at some point, I like his style it is easy reading, descriptive of the times and fast paced.
I have tried to read a book sometimes and if I have not felt into it after the first chapter and my interest isn't sparked to read on then I have to give it up, having said that it can be my mood and another try on another day could prove a different outcome. If I try again and still feel the...
yes indeed hahaa :) what a fabulous end to a fabulous book! I haven't read many sea faring books other than sea wolf and the cruel sea by Nicholas Monsarrat. I am currently reading lots of roman history but will return to the sea topics as I love sea adventures too.
Totally!! the captain was a really intense character, its a long time since I read it but I could read it again I enjoyed it so much. It is a book that stuck in my head and I love a book that makes its mark!

I am just starting this set of books so I can't really comment yet but what I have read so far of the first book the gates of rome is entertaining and conjours up life in those times really well.
I can't believe you had that response in a book shop! try play.com you can get most books you want on there and way cheaper too, they have I Claudius as I am going to order it soon, it is on my list of must read books. I am a Robert Graves fan since reading Goodbye to all that.
