I'm reading Forbidden Archeology by Cremo and Thompson. They have an interesting thesis sure to produce outrage in some quarters: there's long-neglected evidence that man is much older than we presently believe.
This is the kind of a book I tend to read at odd moments in between other books...
C. J. Cherryh is particularly good at developing alien psychology. I'd recommend The Faded Sun trilogy, the Chanur series, and Hunter of Worlds.
Hunter of Worlds has a glossary in the back, by the way. It goes deep enough into alien philosophy that you'll probably want it.
He didn't, so far as I know, write on any philosophical subjects as an atheist, if you're looking for the atheist equivalents of his Christian writing. He did write on secular subjects, however.
Narnia is probably my favorite. But his nonfiction is consistently good; and if you haven't checked out his writings on literature, which are less well-known than his Christian writings, they're well worth looking at. Stuff like The Discarded Image and Studies in Words.
Faust, Part I, the Philip Wayne translation. Part II, not so much.
I really like Shakespeare's histories.
Sherlock Holmes is too much fun to get called literature very often.
