I have read 8 of them: Da Vinci Code The Road The Kite Runner We need to talk about Kevin The Lovely Bones Freakonomics Never let me go Eats, shoots and leaves I am so happy to see 'We need to talk about Kevin', but 'Never let me go' and 'Freakonomics' shouldn't be on this list.

A book about a doctors experiences..

The first thing that comes to my mind is "All creatures big and small" by James Herriot. It is his experience as a veterinary doctor. I love his humor. He passes across profound messages with his stories and humor. On a serious note, Atul Gawande, a surgeon based in US has written two books...

What Did You Read in August

August was a so-so month for me. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter - Kim Edwards The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera September already looks better Paths of glory - Jeffrey Archer Amsterdam - Ian McEwan The Angel’s Game - Carlos Ruiz Zafon

    A Bestseller You Hated

Really? This book is next on my TBR list. Should I give it a second thought?

    A Bestseller You Hated

No, you didn't offend me. Just like how you were curious about why people didn't like these books, I am curious to know why people like them :) No, it was not a rant. It was your appreciation for the book and I respect it. I will sincerely give this a try and I hope I like Salinger this...

    A Bestseller You Hated

It's been a while since I read these books, but I will try to recall. Jane Eyre - I didn't hate this book as much as I hated the protagonist. I know there are people who see Jane Eyre as the epitome of love and humanity, but I find her unreal. The true love and sacrifice for love sounds...

Milan Kundera: The Unbearable Lightness Of Being

I agree with you on the more showing and less telling. I prefer Maugham's way of characterization. He takes a couple of paragraphs to paint the complete picture of a particular character. By the end of these paragraphs, you will know the character like the back of your hand, so to say. While...

    Books with woman protagonist

I need to read books which have woman as the protagonist. I know a few: A Handmaid's Tale The Mermaid Chair The Secret Life of Bees The Bell Jar Veronika Decides To Die I am looking at books like The Mermaid Chair where the focus is on relationships. Any suggestions?

    V.S. Naipul

I read 'Masseur' and didn't like it even a bit. It is not about Naipaul having an outsider view of India. I didn't like his writing style and the story itself was not interesting. In the end, there was nothing that I took back from the book. I am an Indian, BTW.

    Ian Rankin

I compared him with Christie because I have read a lot of her books. I don't know what you mean by contemporary here, but I expect detective novels to have a bit of suspense in them. Christie does drop hints to who the culprit is, but only a smart reader can figure it out (which I could never do...

    Ali Smith: The Accidental

I read this book recently and to sum it up, I didn't understand it. The strange writing style, hopping from one character to another, chapters ending with incomplete sentences, chapters beginning at mid-sentences, weird characters - I can go and on about things I had a problem with. For...

Carlos Ruiz Zafón: The Shadow of the Wind

I agree. The beauty of a sentence lies not only on the literal meaning of the words but on its nuances also. And that rarely happens, doesn't it?

    Alice Munro

Interesting discussion. I recently read the first two stories in the book. I have to admit, it took me some time to get used to Munro. Regarding the ending:

    Ian Rankin

I started with The Complete Stories by Ian Rankin. I have read 4-5 stories so far and they all seem quite lame to me. The plots are too lame, the murderer guessable and I didn't particularly enjoy Rankin's style. The back cover says he is the #1 crime writers alive in England. I expected...

Carlos Ruiz Zafón: The Shadow of the Wind

Oh, so you can read Spanish too? When you have time on hand, may be you can read "The Shadow.." in its original language and see how it is compared to its English version.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón: The Shadow of the Wind

I am surprised to see mixed reviews of this book. I picked up this book because someone on this forum recommended it and though I don't remember who it was, I thank them. As someone said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, but I wouldn't call it one of my favorites. It is not a...
