    Post a poem

Diving into the Wreck by Adrienne Rich First having read the book of myths, and loaded the camera, and checked the edge of the knife-blade, I put on the body-armor of black rubber the absurd flippers the grave and awkward mask. I am having to do this not like Cousteau with his...

I've recently discovered the Asian horror genre! Anyone else see any of these dark films?? Audition is particuarly eery. Am waiting for the English version of that!

    Running With Scissors

Just started the book - only 50 pages in. I hate it when the movie overlaps with my reading of the book. My images of the people and places starts to dissolve and is suddenly replaced with the movie version! The book is hilarious so far. Its hard to believe its a real memoir.

    Richard Matheson: I Am Legend

Funny! Very funny!! Couldn't agree more with you!! Who would you cast??? I was thinking of Robert Carlyle in the lead. A non-lead type of guy - he could be an anyone - everyman - he could be....The Last Man on Earth!!!

    Joyce Carol Oates

Wonderland is good - but, only in my opinion, not her very best. Its a huge effort and it will haunt (as does all of her work). I would recommend starting with "We Were the Mulvaney's". Its a wonderful work and it sort of eases you into her style of heartbreak and redemption! It was actually...

    Jonathan Lethem

Great recommendations! What struck me about Motherless and Fortress was how different they are. Could have been written by 2 completely different people. Thats genuis. Fortress was wonderful, the city itself playing a key role as a character. I also loved the adolesecent sense of magic he...

    Richard Matheson: I Am Legend

Actually this was made into a movie years ago. In 1964 starring Vincent Price called The Last Man on Earth. Its actually quite good. Its ripe for a remake. I'd love to see it re-done!

    Jonathan Lethem

I am in love. I could not believe the genius behind Motherless Brooklyn. Has anyone else out there read it??? The Fortress of Solitude is spectacular in its own right as well. But I was knocked off my feet by Motherless. What a story, what characters! I cannot wait to read his other stuff.

    Apocalypto

Yes, it is David McDuff! Thank you for citing him. Apologies for not. It was not intentional. I am at work and cut and paste too quickly without editing my post. Are they my thoughts as well? For the most part. I have been studying the role of anti-semitism throughout current popular...

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

Being a full time mom and AND working full time out of the home - I average about 35 a year. If I could only find someone who would pay me to stay home and read!!!

    Stephen King

Like Garp (and John Irving) - every author has just one great book in him. King reached it with The Shining. Everything else since has been mediocore. I think I keep reading his stuff in the hopes that he will somehow reach that level again. I've been consistently disappointed.

    Apocalypto

First of all - we were addressing whether or not it made sense to put money in Mel Gibson's pocket when he is such a hate-filled moron. However, I will address your comparisons to Dostoyevky - of which there are really none. Dostoyevsky lived in a different time and space than Mel Gibson and...

    Apocalypto

You seem to have forgotten Mel Gibson's tainted history. Like his father, who joins Iran in stating that the holocaust wasn't really all that bad to the Jews(!!) And you have forgotten the outrage many members of the Jewish community felt at watching the hook nosed Christ killing Jews...

    Apocalypto

To each his own. Though I would recommend thinking twice about who you give your hard earned money away to. I personally do not give mine to anti-semites, racists and pure idiots!

    Apocalypto

Well, this went way beyond stupid. His comments were obnoxious, offensive, anti-semitic, and hurtful. I don't think being drunk is much of an excuse. Those feelings would not have come out if they were not there to begin with. I for one hope it does affect his pocketbook in a big way.

    Apocalypto

Yes, I saw it. Very funny! I loved the ending...I smell bagels! I'm Jewish and I thought it was hilarious!

What new TV shows are you watching?

Oops, my bad. Thanks for the clarification. So Julia Benz is Rita? Well, its a superb cast all around! I'm still fuming over the loss of Dead Like Me. At least Mandy Patinkin has a hit with Criminal Minds. Wonder what has happened to the rest of that cast?!

What new TV shows are you watching?

Yes! Have watched the entire series here in the US. The finale is next Sunday night. Its definitely one of the most inventive, creative shows on television. Its dark and hilariously funny at the same time. Michael C. Hall is phenomenal as Dexter, the serial killer who only kills other...

    Apocalypto

Well...yes. I won't actually pay to see anything he does anymore. Cannot support someone so stupid financially. I might watch Apocalypto if it shows up on HBO or Showtime. But definitely will not give him another cent.

    Smila's Sense of Literature!

Hi everyone! I just joined up today and love this site! My husband actually found it for me. Obviously love to read - historical fiction probably being my favorite. Although there are several contemporary authors I keep up with. Will share more in the other threads. Just saying hi and glad...
