The BoB books are excellent. Two other first person accounts from the American side are Company Commander by Charles B. MacDonald and Shots Fired in Anger by Col. John George.
MacDonald was in the 2nd Division in Europe and George was an Army Infantryman in the Pacific.

Never judge a book by its movie.
I usually prefer the books over the movie version.
The Outlaw Josey Wales....is my favorite adapation of a book into a movie. Most of the book's plot and dialogue made it into the film.

I have enjoyed J.R.R. Tolkien's writings since my first reading of The Hobbit back in grade school....
I re-read his saga of Middle Earth from The Silmarillion....Unfinshied Tales....Children of Hurin....The Hobbit...and The LOTR.....just about every year.
