Because I don't write down the names of the books that I read (and because I have a lousy memory !) I'm not able to remember all the books that I read in 2011. I'm sure that I read something that was worth mentioning , I just don't remember what it was :sad:

Finished The Shadow of The Wind. It could have been my ultimate favorite book if it wasn't for some flaws in the plot and the lack of character development. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading it and could not put it down until the very last page .

My all-time favorite opening line is Italo's calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler :

If it's a hardcover, I use the dust jacket. if it's not, I use business cards, Amazon receipts or I don't use anything at all and just try to remember the page number. It works too!

I never thought of 1984 as a sci-fi before. I find the description "Political Horror" quite accurate though.
I too recommend reading We, a great dystopian novel that is undeservingly less known .
Then, I guess the world of non-fiction is your oyster :D
You might want to check non-fiction books written by your favorite fiction authors. Books like Stephen King's On Writing , Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast and Maugham's The Summing Up just to name a few. I often find these kind of books...
There are so many I don't know where to start. You know you'll make it a lot easier for us if you're being a bit more specific.
