I don't have a large to be read pile, as I don't get to the book stores as often as I used to.
when I do go I get a few books, but I usually read them all at once....along with some I am rereading.
I decide what is next either by the season or the mood I'm in.

I read this quite a few years ago, I remember that I actually felt as if I had entered that weird altered not quite human world that intersected with the world of the unseen.

there are certain books I will reread such as 'A Christmas Carole' I also have reread Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, "A Midwife's Tale" , as well as Good Omens, Practical Magic, Lost country life, white's 'once and future king'
there are quite a few history books and historical biographies I have...
I actually collect different editions of this book.
and normally pick it up towards the holidays, if not immediately after.
I love the atmosphere of the book, ( but I like Dickens in general normally)
There is another book of Dickens short holiday ghost stories that I will skim through...
I read a lot of non fiction, my favorites areas are history, historical biographies, art, cultural anthropolgy ( how did folks actually live, not just the nobility, but normal folk) craft/art/how to books, some science, ( that area is somewhat diverse) the paranormal, historical costuming...
we have books in every single room, and indeed are looking for a new house with more wall space for these books.
( oh and a barn, as I soon will have sheep and would like goats and chickens as well...... )

oh my...... I couldn't possibly list all the craft books, they are easily about 1/4 of my library. ( and my library fills our entire house, we are actually thinking of moving partly because we need more book room)

I am formally reading 'Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell' I have a couple of knitting books I am also reading, as well as a few other odds and ends books.
I also keep a book in the van, which I am part way through for the 4th time.
( car reading is something you can pick up...
oh my goodness I have indeed found my long lost family
( and they are a bunch of smart A**es........ )
I hijack threads all the time btw, ...... romp around a bit with them.... a good time is had by all, and eventually return them, answered and with a full tank of gas

I think 'well read' in this day and age would be more a balance of reading, Possibly grounded in the classics or at least some of the classics. Selections from the Greeks up to today. Also at least a nodding acquaintance with some of the different topics throughout fiction as well as non...
If the book isn't there, then at 3am, when you can't sleep and JUST must re-read a line that is driving you nuts... what will you do?
Or, if you need to prove a point in a discussion, if the book isn't there, that would be the end of the discussion.
Not to mention how comforting it is on a...
