The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich by William Shirer
I had heard of this nonfiction, Pulitzer Prize winning book for ages but dismissed it because I thought it would be very pedantically written. Instead, I found it to be one of the most readable historical accounts I have ever undertaken. It...
Well, when you think about it poetry is a lot like literary music .... I mean, there is classical, hard rock, ballad, etc. One must always be careful when reading reggae poetry while walking down stairs though.
The Scene Of DATo's Death
*Opens fortune cookie and reads* .... Dogs will lead investigators to your grave. .... *Shock resulting from message causes DATo to faint and suffocate in a plate of beef with broccoli thus proving that fortune cookies cannot actually foretell the future*
Sparhawk,
Yes, it is about football. I don't know where you are from but if you are from the United States I think you could relate. It occurred to me after I posted it that people unfamiliar with American "football" might not understand the final sentence.
Meadow,
I agree. I think sports are...
This topic reminds me of Hemingway's six word story .... For sale; baby shoes, never worn.
The Charge
The mists of a cold October morning rise revealing two lines of knights facing each other on a flat plain; the gaily colored device of their attire mocks the seriousness of the moment. Fathers...
I agree. I think Kubrick did an amazing job with 2001. The movie added a surrealistic element to the story which was not present in the book. This, I think, is a very good example of how the medium can enhance or detract from a story. Imagine how difficult it would be to describe the movie...
Well, as you probably know the most famous cheese comes from the Mideast - cheeses of Nazareth: but personally I think each cheese must complement the food or beverage it is being consumed with, for instance; I like parmesan with spaghetti, gouda with wine, swiss with sandwiches, and creamed...
Meadow, I have no Oolong *pulls pants pockets inside out to show he isn't hiding any*. All I have is regular, black, English breakfast tea.
EDIT : STOP THE PRESSES .... I just found two packets of cinnamon spice tea which is sort of like Oolong in a party dress
Most people who are familiar with Being There know it as the 1979 movie by the same title which starred Peter Sellers as Chauncey Gardiner. Few may be aware that the movie was based upon a very short novella by Jerzy Kosinski.
Peter Sellers fell in love with this book and lobbied long and hard...
The Groucho Letters by, (you guessed it) Groucho Marx
"I don't have a photograph. I'd give you my footprints, but they're upstairs in my socks." - Groucho Marx
"Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx
GREETINGS MATT !!!!
Sounds like you have had a pretty exciting and fulfilling life so far. The closest I have ever gotten to a shark was the movie Jaws; and as far as singing with my sister goes, she would have beat the stuffing out of me if I ever tried. I think we are going to get along...
About 15 years ago a coworker introduced me to an amazing set of books he happened to have sitting on his bookshelf. It was a three part documentation of the history of the Army Of The Potomac during the American Civil War by Bruce Catton. Book 1) Mr. Lincoln's Army, Book 2) Glory Road, Book 3)...
The Guns Of August is one of the finest books I have ever read. Tuchman was one of the finest historians the U.S.A. has ever produced. She was the Doris Kearns Goodwin of her generation.
This book quite possibly saved humanity. This is not an idle statement. The Guns Of August had been...
Peder,
You are correct. Mann himself said that his goal was to get the reader to actually step into the book and live among the residents of the sanatorium. This worked to a certain extent with me as well as a friend as I mentioned in my OP. As we both know life at the Berghof was very...
Tea
I am currently drinking spiced tea which I stole from work. Well, I actually didn't steal it. I am invited to attend informal meetings which take place when it is time for me to go home, and since I don't want to be late, and get stuck in the rush hour traffic, I usually faux-regretfully...
