Book Recommendation Along Same Lines
There's a great book called Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Dr. Amen that is easily readable and has some great recommendations for improving brain performance. The book also describes a coming revolution in psychiatry involving functional brain...
Wagon on Blocks
All it needs is a rain-spoiled sofa and a dozen half-naked kids running around and it would remind me of some of the places where I grew up :D Well, the rides-on-blocks in the yard were slightly more modern in those places.

This is what I found
BLUF (That's Bottom-Line-Up-Front, for you nonmilitary types): The published research is not terribly robust. However, the below study, which was published in a somewhat esoteric journal but is from Yale, basically states that energy expenditure by the brain only increases...
Absolutely
Your brain is the most energy-hungry organ in the human body -- 2% of bodymass yet responsible for 20% of energy expenditure. I'm not aware of any studies comparing caloric use during difficult mental tasks vs. at rest, but it would be an interesting Pub Med search. However, as an...
I think I just read about that book in The Economist
Is it an e-book only? I think I just read a blurb about it in The Economist, which was rather intriguing. Last week's issue had a 'Special Report' on London (about 15 pages) that you might find interesting. Just a suggestion and thanks for...
Another cool flick

Hey!
Welcome! Your name brings to mind the movie that I saw last night. It's sort of an oldie (moderately old, anyhow), but check out Spygame with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt if you haven't seen it before.
Timeline
Not exactly classical HF, but Timeline is a great look at medieval life that really challenged some of the paradigms that were common (at least in my mind) about medieval combat when it was published. Yes, I do bump Crichton a lot -- but that's because I love his work!

The Cannabinoid Hypothesis, now 0.99 cents
Well, my historical fiction seems to sell better than my medical fiction -- odd, since I'm a physician! Anyway, to try to get people to give my medical fiction a shot, The Cannabinoid Hypothesis is now available for 0.99 cents. I tried to make it free...
