R.K. Narayan, a great writer cum humorist cum satirist cum entertainer. He usually sets his novels in Pre Independence India in a fictional town Malgudi, supposedly located in South India. I have read four of his novels:
1 Swami and Friends
2 Vendor of Sweets
3 The English Teacher
4 The...

War and Peace was the first novel by Leo Tolstoy that I read. And, I was simply amazed by his ability to make perfect relation between history and fiction, love and conflict and outer looks and inner thoughts of his characters. Hardly knew anything about the Napoleonic wars before I read this...
I had heard a lot about Alchemist and my expectations were quite high. Honestly, I did believe that the book would revolve around alchemy. But, the treasure discovered by the boy was totally different. I liked the beginning and the end, but the book did seem to falter in middle, with Paulo...
I never plan reading, just pick up one from my bookshelf depending on my mood. However, I have four books left unread from my last purchase, while my recently bought five are on their way to reach me. I think its high time I finish with the earlier ones.
Do we need a reason to breathe fresh air, to admire beauty of nature or to give plenty of love to people who matter? For me, reading books is akin to these basic human instincts, an activity that connects me with a thousand minds, refreshes me with a billion ideas. I would never ever need any...
While reading a good book, I am completely immersed in author's world, and when my entire existence has been reduced to a visualizer, how can I ever imagine myself as some character. Though, I often feel a part of the story as a spectator and can see the drama unfold.
But,the above is true...
I recently read The Alchemist, a book that was on my must-read list for quite some time, and I have to confess that I liked it only in parts. The beginning was good, and I was taken in by the strange mythical characters and places Paulo conjured up. I was quite keen to find out whether the...
I recently read Under the Dome by Stephen. It was first king novel and I absolutely loved it. Stephen can create a totally fictional world with such real characters, that you get really involved in the plot. I spent many sleepless nights, as I just could not stop reading. No sooner one chapter...
I have read Girl with the Dragon Tatoo and Girl who kicked the Hornet's Nest. Somehow I missed the second book of the series, and this costed me a few pages of Hornet nest, when I felt lost on missing some cues. However, by the end of the book, all the mysteries that were presumably left...
'Life is what you make it' by Preeti Shenoy. It is a story of a schizophrenic girl, who all of a sudden loses her ability to comprehend and turns suicidal. The novel traces her fall into the dungeons of depression and her struggle to come out of it. A touching book, especially as Preeti Shenoy...
'Eleven Minutes' is the first and only book of Paulo Coelho, I have read so far, and I am amazed by his ability to portray the life of a prostitute in such a dignified manner, never degrading Maria's profession. Paulo has in fact given a sneak peek into her pure soul and her zeal to fulfil her...
I recently read Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw and I just loved it. I found the play to be quite ahead of its time. Set in Old London, where male chivalry was the norm of society, Shaw did make a bold attempt to portray Eliza Doolittle as a strong woman, who is ready to live an independent...
Libra, the story is available at books.google.com
I dont know how to give the link. Hope you will be able to find it by searching 'The Accursed house short story by emile gabriau'
Yes, Occlith, the story is quite absorbing. It is a comment on the human folly of being judgemental about others nature due to our own preconceived notions. Couldn't find any other stories by Emile though.
I recently read a short story 'The Accursed House' by the french writer, Emile Gabriau. I really liked Emile's way of writing and his ability to exhibit the strange paradoxes of this world in a comic tone. Have anyone of you read the story? Any suggestions regarding his other great stories.
I hated God of small Things, because of lack of conviction in the storyline and the unidimensional portrayal of characters and overemphasis on morality issues. The book failed to evoke any emotions in me, leave alone depressing me.
A single reading of R.K. Narayan's 'Malgudi Days' would...
