I just braved the boxing day crowds to spend my Chrissy gift voucher - I bought Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and the first book of the Harry Potter series.
I haven't yet read any of the Potter books so I figured I was ready to get taken away on a series journey :P
To those of you who seem to know Dostoyevsky's work well - which of his books would you recommend to a newcomer. I am a fan of the classics, and have in my collection Crime and Punishment, Notes and The Double.
Any recommendations of which I should start with first?

Hello fello aussie reader :)
So far so good on the Stephanie Laurens book. I recommend when reading Stephanie Laurens that you read them in the order they were written... hope you have already, otherwise you might not get the full effect of them all together. They're...
You're talking about adding emotion into a court of law. The idea of law and order is effectively to judge an act purely in an objective manner. If you add in one emotional or mental element into the decision of whether a person commits a crime or not it becomes too subjective. The basis of...
I think people are afraid of what they don't understand. Some people even go to the point of criticising it simply BECAUSE they don't understand it.
Gaf, it's unfortunate that your family (other than your mum) can not experience the joy that you have from reading your favourites. Some people...

I am also a newbie, and so far it's a great little forum. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I am :)
And if you makes you feel any better, I haven't read Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife :o
Happy reading :)
Shakespeare's sonnets are always a good way to start off on his work...
Also .. even sometimes particular movies that quote shakespeare, i find, always inspire me to read him.. and get lost in his words.. like "The Prince and Me" with Julia Stiles..
good movie :P i'm a soppy romantic.. what...
Thanks :) I really like the quote too.. can't remember who wrote it.. but it moved me .. so i quote it often now :)
Yeah i thought the same about old books i hated.. like "to kill a mockingbird" - We were made to read it back in school and watch the movie, and i just didn't get it.. i think i...
Hehe, i've thought of getting it out again recently actually.
You know how obviously as you get older your perceptions of things change... so i'm thinking it might be rather interesting to read it again. It's been a fair few years since i read it the first/second/upteenth time :)
I guess it's...
I was really looking forward to Linkin Park's new album, Minutes to Midnight. It was definately worth the wait.
I really enjoy their music simply because it's different, has an underlying message and it's just catchy. All of their albums have been great investments. I don't think there's one...
