    Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead

Outlaw, Thank you for the excerpt. I wish it was printed on the front page of every newspaper tomorrow. 44

    Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead

Given the current economic times, Rand's works are ever more relevant. I doubt that Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged will be consulted, but they should be. Her foresight is eerily accurate. 44

Graham Greene: Our Man in Havana

Found both books you mentioned dusty dry, plodding, and not very interesting.

Paulo Coelho: The Devil And Miss Prym

This, again, was not one of my favorites of Coelho. I prefer his straight forward fables, like the Alchemist. I appreciate his concept and the setup with the buried gold is great. But I would prefer some more reasoning skills among his characters instead of the fear factor.

    Bonk's Bar, Chapter 1

If for no other reason, I do not want to post material that may contain plot points that change. Like time travel, it won't make sense later.

    Bonk's Bar, Chapter 1

I've been working on this entire book, which naturally includes this first Chapter. Tom Bonk is a bitter guy and as the story unfolds, the reader learns why. There is plenty of emotion in the book, everything from his resentment towards his father to the honor he gives his brother's memory. He...

    Robert Saviano: Gomorrah

Got through Robert Saviano's GOMORRAH the other day. This is a serious book about the criminal element around Naples, Italy. The author got inside various elements there and reveals much of the inner workings. It is not pretty. His writing is dramatic and sometimes goes over the top. However...

    Bonk's Bar, Chapter 1

Points well made and well taken. I'll be working on it. Thanks.

Darcy Lever: The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor

Robert, I ordered both books from Amazon. Funny you should mention The Art of Rigging. I have that and a few others, some about building model ships that actually show great details with explanations about these ships. Fascinating stuff. I have a photo from Lever's book on my blog if you want...

    Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead

SFG, Your points about Sinclair and Steinbeck are well taken. I think we're delving into literary theory here when it comes to the progress or lack thereof that characters make over the course of the story. As you say, Rand doesn't follow the typical arc of plot development but rather imbeds...

Darcy Lever: The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor

Supplementing the above mentioned book, I'd like to also recommend "Before The Wind" by Charles Tyng. Penguin published this book a while ago. Worth a look, again, if you're into the sailing Genre. Tyng was sent to sea early in his life, from Massachusetts to China, around the world a half dozen...

    Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead

You've got me going back to my college copy of this book. I remember it well. I think the power of Rand's story in The Foutainhead (and her other works) is her ability to separate the producers from the parasites. She does this with a heavy hand, but no heavier than those writing in some other...

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

Hollywood is full of people who don't know how to make movies (or tell stories for that matter) telling other people how to make movies. Anyway, I may have to give O'Brian another try. I've read two books and just can't get any traction. At present, I'm researching a story that takes place...

I divide my time between Philadelphia, Aruba, and Spain. Not sure where that leaves me.

    Sinclair Lewis

As mentioned above, Main Street is especially relevant if you've grown up in a small town.

    Greetings from Germany

Welcome to the board. Don't worry about any mistakes in English. Have trouble with it myself. My German is no longer with me, but thinking about reviving it.

How many books have you read?

How many books have I read? Hmmmm.... just enough to prop up that sagging corner of the house.
