Anyone know of a good robbery book?

I second that. One of my favs from him.

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

I didn't expect to get the movie out of the book. I expected more since they leave so much out to make a movie. I just wanted to get some action out of it. But seriously, nothing had happened by the middle of the book and the characters didn't have enough personality to hold my attention on...

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

Really? Sigh. I loved the movie so much and adore historical fiction. It was just such a colossal disappointment when I started reading the first one. There's so much I want to read that this is definitely one of those cases where I'm just going to cut my losses and move on. Maybe some day I'll...

    Cornelia Funke: Inkdeath

Count me in as well. Someone I know got an advance copy of Inkdeath at the BEA in LA recently. Sigh. I am so jealous. I really want to see what's going to happen with Dustfinger and crew. Annoyed that the movie got pushed back too. Dumb writers' strike just screwed up all kinds of things.

The Mysterious Benedict Society - Trenton Lee Stewart

Have you been to the website? The Curiosity Chronicle. Has puzzles and a bunch of other fun stuff on there. The second book in the series is on my list for my next trip to the library. (I apparently haven't made enough posts to be able to include the URL. Sorry. I'll come back after I hit the...

    James Holland: Rubicon

It's on my list as I'm trying to beef up my reading on the Roman republic and empire era for a website I have. (I need more suggestions for the republic era, particularly the years before Sulla.) It's by Tom Holland, BTW, not James.

    Patrick O'Brian: Master And Commander

I tried to read these. I really did. But when I was halfway through the first book and we hadn't even finished loading the ship, much less actually made it out to sea, I decided I had had enough. Would like to try a few of the others mentioned in this thread, though. I could use a little...

    Simon Scarrow: The Eagle Serie

Really? I just finished the first one and actually really enjoyed it. I think Cato and Macro are possibly a bit stock, but I expect that they would be fleshed out more in future stories. I'm actually excited about reading another in the series. Hmm. Maybe I've just been reading too many kids...

    The purpose of historical fiction

Since it's all about me, the point is to entertain me!! Actually, historical fiction, with all its flaws, is still my favorite way to learn about life in times past. In a way that is engaging with characters I care about. And nobody expecting me to remember the precise date for something. And...

    Book recommendations for a preteen?

I would second the recommendations for the Cornelia Funke books. Loved those and she bounces back and forth between boy and girl primary characters. Just finished the Mysterious Benedict Society, which was a nice fat one that might keep him entertained for a while. Among my favorites...

The Mysterious Benedict Society - Trenton Lee Stewart

Just finished it this past week and loved it. Reviewed it on my book review blog and am looking to get the next book as soon as I can. Engaging story, clever puzzles, great characters. Granted, some of it bordered on fantastical, but with kids books, that's usually what makes it so fun.
