    Which is the...

"The Serrano Legacy" by Elizabeth Moon Why is someone clearly obsessed with interior decor, clothes, cuisine, and horses trying to write sci-fi ?? I hardly ever give up on a book but flicking through to random pages and reading yet more about the plush purple cushions that were in the...

    Real-life Authors As Characters

Byron, Keats & Shelley in "The Stress of Her Regard" by Tim Powers Byron again (sort of ) in "Lord Byron's Novel: The Evening Land" by John Crowley Giordano Bruno (although he's more of a scientist / philosopher) in John Crowley's Aegypt series.

    Emily Brontë: Wuthering Heights

I first read it when I was 10 ( I had a very high reading age that I eventually grew into) inspired by Kate Bush's single  In my teens I was obsessed with the book and the idea of Heathcliff. We lived on the North Yorks Moors so I spent a lot of time striding up and down "brooding", hoping...

Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

I'm willing to take the risk :) It worries me that in school kids are forced into an unnatural social structure formed only of their peers for most of the day. By home education my son will have a much wider experience of different types and ages of people with different opinions, rather than...

    Should drugs be legalized?

I can't stand drug use, and I think it's the alcohol and weed that everyone reckons is harmless and ok that does the most damage. My brother (with whom I now have no contact because of his substance abuse) has spent his entire life drifting, drinking huge amounts of booze, smoking more and more...

Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

I am a Norse Tradition Pagan here in the UK. I agree with children being given an overview of all religions in a historical or literary context, but not with one particular religion being taught as truth. I also disagree with religious assemblies and worship as part of school life, as in my dim...

The first sentence in the book you're reading

The story, so far removed in time and space and so far-fetched, seemed an exotic fabrication when I first heard it from my uncle's lips, those lips with a hint of sly smile at the upturned corners, just enough to crinkle crow's feet round his eyes. Ink - Hal DUncan

    Clockwork Orange: Movie Vs. Book

I'd say don't be put off the book by the film. I love books with their own lingo, like Iain M Banks' "Feersum Enjinn" and really enjoyed the book which I've read several times. I still call things "horrorshow" :) I too watched the film with glee as I'd been led to believe it was really wicked...

Usernames!!!! How did you get yours?

Mine comes from a drunken story telling night at Uni when someone told the story of a goblin made from the giblets of the Xmas turkey that came alive and did untold mischief. His name was Snippety Giblets :lol:Loved it and adopted it as my online ID. Shortened to Snippety mostly these days.

    Virginia Woolf: Mrs Dalloway

Hi I'm a newbie so this thread is new to me. I love Virigina Woolf, but did first discover the books as part of my degree so had help  My favourite thing with Mrs Dalloway is to : 1) Watch film of Mrs Dalloway starring Vanessa Redgrave which does give you a handle if you need a plot :) 2)...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Children Of Hurin

I'd say yes. My husband went to a reading in London and managed to get me a copy signed by Christopher Tolkien, Alan Lee and Bernard Hill !! It is one of my most treasured possessions and also proved to be a very good read. I know the story very well from the Silmarillion and the History of...

    Recommend a very good (semi-)obscure fantasy/sf book

Hi This is my first post and I've only had time to skim this very interesting thread so forgive me if these have already been mentioned: Engine Summer and Little Big by John Crowley (my favourite author of all time :)) and Body of Glass by Marge Piercy.

    Hi there

Hello, I've just found this forum this morning and I'm looking forward to exploring later. I'm a stay at home mum of a lively 13 month old so my reading time has been reduced to almost 10% of what it was pre-boy  I enjoy mainly sci-fi and fantasy but also Jane Austen, Viriginia Woolf...
