once i've found a book i'm thinking of buying, i leave the store immediatley. If after an hour or so shopping i find i'm still thinking about it and i still want it, i go back and buy it. If i've forgotten about it - my subconscious was probably being seduced by outside forces and i didn't...
shame the duck has gone but i can't believe this is a book forum and no one suggested the title of Jim dodge's classic short story about a duck.
what was he called? Fup!
FUP duck

i'll pick one that changed my life, can't remember much about it though - he he.
"On the road" Jack Kerouac, after reading this i had to travel immediatley, don't know anyone that this book hasn't had that effect on them. Even my best mate who had never left the country tried living in spain...

yep keep at it, great book, the multiple story threads in two towers can make it a little confusing at first, if you've got lost and want to talk about it, start a thread i'm sure the countless tolkein addicts(me included) will be more than pleased to help you get through it.

just one book are you kidding? if i knew who i was recommending for i could take a stab at it!
okay so if you are recommending "god of small things" (which i haven't read due to it's best seller status putting me off), though i assume it's some sort of spiritual book about not overlooking the...
have to disagree i think tortilla flats and cannery row are two of his most entertaiing reads, i would start with either of them, mice and men and grapes of wrath are great pieces of literature but are likely to put you off steinbeck, especially Gripes at wrath.

ps damien why not...
not really my cup of tea i'm afraid, thought i should let you know in case you thought we were being ignorant.
actually these days truth is stranger than fiction so i just watch the news to see what crazy new ideas our prime minister (A.K.A Clownshoes) and his circus of idiots are proposing...
yep bukowski is my favourite, i also like some works by elliot and dare i mention Ted Hughes - yes i dare.
Also i have a friend who is a manchester poet, he has a new book out which is marvellous *shameless plug warning* his book is called something like "the book of matthew" i'm not fond of...
i started reading the minute i could pick up a book, i guess my tastes have changed since my mr. man books but only the ratio of text to pictures i still prefer absurdism to other breeds of literature. i often get magical realism confused with absurdism, then i remember that magical realism is...
i tend to have a lot on the go at once, usually all different genres that i dip into when i feel like it, could be months or days inbetween readings, for example i've got these on the go at the moment:
The gospel according to jesus christ - bit heavy
Elric omnibus - fantasy escapism light...
struggling to make headway into hardboiled wonderland and the end of the world, took a break with "fup" by jim dodge - love that book, will give haruki another go afterwards, huruki's cool but i wish calvino could have knocked a bit of "concision" and "exactitude" into him!
