Just finished this one because of many, many Book Forum recommendations. I'm so glad I read it. Although some of the material was pretty gruesome and tough to read, I believe Saramago truly conveyed what would be happening if something like this occurred in real-life.
A couple questions...
Finished reading this one a couple days ago, and I'm still chewing on it. Ashlea, you're right, the language is beautiful in that I felt it truly conveyed to me what it would be like to be lost at sea like that. At times I felt the desperation Pi must've felt; so often you see movies about...
Seems like he hasn't written much "horror" in a long while. I love his writing because it not only is great escape reading, but almost always makes an impact on me. I loved False Memory and From the Corner Of His Eye.
One question, though. This has probably been asked a million times...
For some reason, the only Hemingway I've read is Old Man and the Sea, so more of him, definitely. Suggestions for what to read first?
I also would like to get through Count of Monte Cristo.
I second Michael Connelly. More of a cop thriller, but very believable and suspenseful, with great character development IMO. The Harry Bosch series is one of the best of its kind.
I usually use Post-its as well. However, you can't put the book down for too long, because with paperbacks the sticky part of the post-it starts wearing off the ink it's covering. :)
