I picked up some great deals on some books at an outlet mall. Two of which I'm really excited about because I really wanted those(Bear v Shark & Underworld).
Bought these brand new:
Bear v. Shark(hardback) - $5
Underworld by - $6
Silence of the Lambs - $4.99
The Good Fight(hardback) -...
The Pearl
Animal Farm
Jane Eyre
A Separate Peace
Red Badge of Courage
Lord of the Flies
Great Expectations
Huckleberry Finn
Grapes of Wrath
Beowolf
Romeo and Juliet
Macbeth
Of course he doesn't. It's called "A Case for Christ". The whole point is taking a position on a subject. If he wasn't taking a position it would be "A Balanced Look at Christ" or something like that.
I picked up a Pevear and Volokhonsky translation at B&N. They give it the title "Demons" and say that it was eroneously translated as "The Possessed". I've seen it titled as "Devils", "Demons" and "The Possessed". I can't wait to read this, maybe even moreso than "Crime and Punishment". Any...
He's a fabulous writer. I read White Noise over the Christmas holiday. I just picked up End Zone, which sounds fantastic. A football player becomes obsessed with the similarities between nuclear conflict and football, during the football season. haha, Delillo is great. I need to check out...
For some reason this went over a lot of people's heads when we read this in high school. I thought it was terrific. Of course I like things that have double or hidden meanings. I love the line "some animals are more equal than others".
That sums up the whole subject matter of the book.
I do the same thing. I have a satchel/sportsbag that I bring to work with me and carry my current book. And I carry it around almost wherever I go, so If I end up just waiting around I have something to do. I guess I spend a minimum of 30 mins reading. Sometimes hours if I really get into it and...
My brother in law saw me reading and said that he would read some but he doesn't really know anything good to read. What suggestions would you give for him. He's about 25.
I was thinking of buying him Survivor by Palahniuk. I like that one a lot and it's easy reading. And thought it was...
I went with the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. I skimmed it a little and it flows better for me. I have Garnett's translation of Notes from the Underground and ecks is right she seems to tranlate it in a boring, longwinded style. Now I just have to finish up 1984 so I can start on Crime and...
I don't lend books because I would never get them back.
Also on my own but unread list:
Satanic Verses - Rushdie
The Beach - Alex Garland
Puzzle Palace
Holy Blood, Holy Grail
Bloodline of the Holy Grail
I have an evergrowing stack of books that I haven't read or have partially read. And it only gets worse every time I go to the used bookstore.
My list:
Iliad
Odyssey
Confederacy of Dunces (read half)
Fast Food Nation (read half)
Ghost Wars
Secret Agent - Conrad
The Holographic...
I am planning on reading Crime and Punishment. Which translator is the best? I've heard someone say that Pevear and Volokhonsky are very good. I have seen a lot of Crime and Punishment that were translated by Constance Garnett. Can anyone compare the two? I'm looking to buy the book in a couple...
