it's got exceptional descriptive writing & a plot that gradually grabs you and makes you want to read on & on.
everytime i manage to read a chunk (20 pages or so at a time if i'm lucky being the proud owner of 2 young sons!) i invariably think to myself " that is wonderful"
i honestly can't...
i read house of sleep on honeymoon in florida, very good if i remember.
the rotters club is currently gathering dust on my shelf, must blow those cobwebs off!!
being the father of 2 small boys i'm lucky to get 5 minutes to myself for a read. i tend to read on the bog these days that's why it's taken 5 months to read the corrections by jonathan franzen!

i read a tom clancy book once & i can honestly say it was the worst thing i've ever read. it had all the trademarks of a formula book, shorter & shorter chapters towards the end, desperately obvious plot strands clumsily pulled together as the end mercifully loomed.......:rolleyes:
i also thought enduring love was a very,very good book.
as for iain banks, i've never tried the sci-fi; but i loved all his "normal" stuff particularly the wasp factory, walking on glass & the bridge. :)
